Schreiber High School Middle States Implementation 2006-2008 Progress Update
2
Objective #1 By the year 2014 students at Schreiber High School will demonstrate academic improvement by earning an increased number of advanced Regents diplomas, an increase in the number of students achieving mastery on Regents examinations and an increase in enrollment in elective courses.
3
Initiatives Curriculum maps created in all departments using Rubicon Atlas software. Item analysis of Regents exam results conducted in Social Studies, Science and English. Increased horizontal and vertical articulation (i.e., curriculum mapping, subject area meetings, departmental meetings with Weber staff, inter- disciplinary departmental meetings) Progress steps completed toward improving academic achievement and mastery levels.
4
Initiatives Continued Departmental table top exhibits created to highlight elective offerings during Open House. Continued support of an “Elective Fair” to showcase diversity of course offerings. Thematic guides developed in Social Studies. Study skills and organizational techniques infused into the curriculum in Social Studies, Biology, Chemistry, English and Mathematics. Writing Center created and staffed for part of school day.
5
Initiatives Continued Expansion of Honor Societies in English, Social Studies, and Art. Korean and Spanish speaking Honor Society students served as translators during Parent-Teacher night. Guidance department expanded the offering of ACT exams to on- site. Inauguration of expanded Senior Experience program. Princeton Review SAT prep course hosted at Schreiber with scholarship aide for students in need. Though increasing elective offerings is a part of our Middle States goals, we are currently unable to offer enough sections of courses (i.e., technology, business, AP Writing & Composition, Advanced French Conversation) due to enrollment increases and higher levels of interest limits student opportunities.
6
Professional Development Committee Establishment of faculty committee to develop staff development topics. Varied professional development options for faculty is goal of committee (i.e., full staff renewal, technology, academic content, methodology). Highly desirable conference and workshop opportunities for teachers advocated by Middle States have been reduced due to budget cuts. This negatively impacts course development and teacher training. Committee acts as clearinghouse for information on staff development opportunities. Numerous new professional growth opportunities created through the use of combined 1 and 2 hour curriculum Wednesdays and Superintendents conference days.
7
Objective #2 By the year 2014, Schreiber High School students will gain proficiency in information literacy as measured by grade level assessments of information literacy standards.
8
Information Literacy Committee School-generated Information Literacy Standards created and adopted. Information Literacy Assessment developed by committee and conducted at all grade levels. Information Literacy skills and activities integrated into curriculum maps.
9
Information Literacy / Departmental Innovations Research projects now mandatory in Social Studies on all grade levels. Librarians currently developing new grade level presentations, instructional strategies, and student support programs to support this objective.
10
Objective #3 By the year 2014 Schreiber High School students will show an improved understanding of integrity, conduct and civic responsibility.
11
Actions and Activities Conducted a school climate survey (bi-annual). Enhanced Club Fair Day presentations and exhibits have led to increased participation in extracurricular activities. There have been requests for even more clubs and activities that cannot be fulfilled due to limited funding. Held first annual School Wide Spirit Week. Expanded STEPS (Success through Educational Alternatives, Personal Initiatives and Social Support) Program for at-risk 9 th /10 th /11 th /12 th grade students. Developed a more formalized computer-generated process of tracking disciplinary assignments in order to work with staff and students.
12
Actions and Activities (continued) Developed new parent education program and college workshops for Spanish speaking parents. Issued a position paper on community service. Hosted the first annual Community Service Fair. Created a Student of the Month program. Accepted a record number of Parent/Teacher memberships to the HSA. Character education strands incorporated within curriculum maps. Character education assembly programs held that emphasize improved decision making.
13
Conduct Character and Mission Committee School Mission Statement in the process of revision. Genocide Awareness Day conducted. Recycling program initiated. Committee discussions on student management policies and procedures initiated. One aspect of the plan was to request a Character Education / Community Service coordinator. This was not requested due to current budget issues.
