2 The 18th amendment It was approved by a 36th state on January 16th 1919 and it took effect 1 year later. It was entirely repealed in December of 1933

3 Before the amendment was passed almost 65% of the country had already banned the sale of alcohol.

4 During the prohibition period religious and medical uses of alcohol were permitted. It was still sold over the counter in pharmacies.

5 Alcohol consumption was still cut in half during prohibition and remained below pre-prohibition levels until the 1940s.

6 Law enforcement struggled to enforce the new law because many people were making their own alcohol or importing it. A captured moonshine still

7 The prohibition era is still criticized for the unintentional boost in urban organized crime today.

8 Bootlegging is the illegal production and sale of liquor.
Speakeasies are spots where alcohol is sold or consumed illegally.

9 Bathtub gin is a poorly homemade gin served in tall bottles filled in bathtubs. Its also used as a general term for cheap booze.

10 Dry is a term for the supporters of prohibition
Dry is a term for the supporters of prohibition. Wet is a term for people against prohibition.

11 When the Great Depression started in 1929 the government lost needed tax revenue from alcohol.

12 By 1932 the Great Depression was a big motivation for repealing the amendment to create a new job industry for workers. A reopened brewery

13 After the repeal of the prohibition act many states continued on as dry states. Mississippi was the last state to repeal in 1966.
