Don’t mess with Tejas Spanish Tejas bordered the United States and was rich in natural resources and fertile land and waterways Tejas had very few Spanish settlers and had trouble protecting its land from Native Americans and Settlers With only 4000 Tejanos living in Texas Spain tried to encourage people to settle there in order to fight off Americans and Native Americans Spain was Unable to Attract Spanish Settlers to Texas so they sold land to Moses Austin as long as he followed Spanish Laws

I remember that TV show?** When Mexico gained its Independence from Spain Stephen Austin had to reapply for a Land Grant Mexico granted Austin the land as long as the 297 families agreed to be Mexican citizens and Roman Catholic Austin made his settlers live Moral lives and became a model for Mexican settlement By 1830, there were 30,000 Americans outnumbering Tejanos six to one

High Tension Area Americans soon became upset with Mexican laws and tried to follow American laws, language, and slave rights Tejanos viewed the Americans as egotistical and entitled and resented their unwillingness to follow Mexican law As Mexico grew tired of the tensions in Texas they banned American immigration, Instituted taxes, and sent Mexican troops to the state to enforce their laws

This Means War Stephen Austin tried to create a Self-governing state of Texas within Mexico As general Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna worked with Austin on the reforms, when he heard talk of rebellion he jailed Austin for a year Santa Anna would send more troops into Texas to put down the rebellion and capture key weaponry Mexico failed to capture the cannons in Texas and were driven from their fortress at the Alamo Mexico would respond by sending 6,000 more troops into Texas

Getting Ready for Fight Night As Texas claimed Independence from Mexico Sam Houston was named commander of the Texan Army The Texan Troops were outnumbered with James Fannin Controlling about 400 troops and William Travis controlling 183 men including Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie Juan Seguin led 25 Tejano Troops who also supported Independence

What is in the Basement of the Alamo?** As the Mexican Troops attacked the Alamo and Texan Troops refused to surrender the fort The Texans defended the Alamo for 13 days but would run out of Ammunition and would be forced to Surrender at the Battle of the Alamo The Surviving Texan Soldiers would be executed after the battle and ordered surviving women to spread the story of the Alamo around Texas Texans soon realized how hard they would have to fight to gain their independence

Remember the Alamo As Mexico chased Texan Settler out of the Country, Texans angered at the execution of soldiers doubled their army to 800 troops Sam Houston would lead his troops to the San Jacinto River and lead a fierce attack on Santa Anna’s troops It would take the Troops 18 minutes to kill half of the Mexican Army and Texas would win its freedom and the Battle of San Jacinto

The Stars at night are big and bright After the Victory over Mexico, Texas would become independent, would be led by Sam Houston, and bee known as the Lone Star Republic Texas would soon ask for entry into the United States via annexation but the north feared the slave states would take control of congress Texas would remain in dependent for to years and would lead to eventual war with Mexico
