Settlers move to Texas SSteven Austin was paid and brought over by an empresario of the newly formed Mexican Government to start the Texas Colony. TThere were 300 families that came and settled. CColony was very successful and many others came.

Texans gone Wild Settlers had a difficult time following the rules: Convert to Catholic No slaves 1830 – Mexican Government bans any more American settlement. Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna takes over and attempts to settle the Texas issue.

Texas Declares Independence Skirmishes began October 1835. March 2, 1836 Texas declares independence. Government modeled after US, except that slavery was legal in the constitution. Sam Houston becomes head of army. Santa Anna really ticked off!

Battle at the Alamo One of the battles took place outside of San Antonio at this old abandoned mission. Davy Crockett, Jim Bowie and about 200 others fought against the Mexican Army. Fought for two weeks, but ultimately ALL 200+ Texans were killed! At the next battle (Goliad) Santa Anna killed all 350 prisoners!

Battle of San Jacinto HHouston rallied his troops to attack the Mexican camp with the battle cry, “REMEMBER THE ALAMO!!” TTexans win this battle and capture Santa Anna – he was forced to sign a treaty giving Texas its Independence.

The Republic of Texas Sam Houston – President Stephen Austin – Secretary of State Created Houston as capital city. Encouraged American settlement. Andrew Jackson, France and Britain all recognized Texas’ independence by 1840.independence

Mexican relations Texas Rangers are established to protect the border, because Mexicans were still bitter over the loss. It takes Mexican government until 1844 to recognize Texas as an independent country and sign a peace treaty. They remain confrontational toward white settlement in the west.
