2. The Components of a Percent Problem
1. BASE: the whole or total, starting point, or that to which something is compared
2. RATE: the percent (%)
3. PART: The result of multiplying the base and rate. PART of the whole.

Part = Base x Rate
Ex: find the part

4. Calculating Sales Tax P = B x R Sales tax = Sales x Sales Tax Rate

5. Helpful hints…
1. The base is usually preceded by words like OF or ON. It represents the whole.
2. The rate is followed by the word percent or %.
3. The part is in the same units as the base and is usually a portion of the base.
