From Glasgow to Beijing Lesson 6 One Child Policy

Learning Intentions Academic Goal – To understand the reasons why the Chinese government decided to introduce this policy, – To learn about the impact of this policy on the population of China and the effect it has had on the people of China Social Goal

Success Criteria I can give an explanation as to why the One Child Policy was introduced. I can describe the impact that this policy has had.

During the 1940’s the Chinese government encouraged people to have large families in order for the country to gain military strength and for the people to help with agricultural production

This led to a massive problem in China – over population. It was estimated that the population increased by 55million every 3 years.

During the 1950’s and 1960’s the Chinese government tried to address the problem by encouraging people to have fewer children. Average family sizes fell from 5 children per family to 3 children.

However this still wasn’t enough as the population was still growing at a rapid rate. There was not enough food for everyone and people were starving. China introduced the One Child Policy in 1979.

Task Read the information sheet on the One Child Policy and answer the questions in your jotter.

Lesson Recap Over the last two periods we have looked at the One Child Policy. You should be able to explain why it was introduced and describe the impact it has had on China. Exit passes Collect a post it note from your teacher. On this write down three things you have learned about the One Child Policy – put it on the board before you leave.

Key Question HOMEWORK Write a paragraph discussing the statement below- The Chinese government was right to try and deal with the problem of over-population but wrong to introduce the One Child Policy. The policy impacted on the Chinese people’s human rights.
