1 TRACES OF THE PAST – schools adopt monuments Warsaw, 23th April 2012

2 THE PROGRAMME’S MISSION The project builds awareness and responsibility of cultural heritage of Poland and Europe. It teaches about history and shows how to respect cultural diversity, as well.

3 The youth – participating in the educational programme Traces of the past – searches for a historical monument in their region, learns about its history and takes care of it. 5 TRACES OF THE PAST  The programme is intended for students in:  elementary schools  middle schools  secondary schools  The programme can be implemented:  in the course of civic education, history, literature, art classes  as a part of cross-curricular regional educational path  as extracurricular activities TRACES OF THE PAST

6 Set off in search of traces of the past  Choose subject collecitvely  Collect initial information  Prepare a scheme of activities  Formulate activities and detailed schedule  Look for the assistance CHOOSING THE SUBJECT

7  Collect information on a chosen subject  Take advantage of historic al research Sources of information: Libraries, Archives, Museums, Regional Heritage Boards, Local Authorities, Website Collected material: Documentation, analyses, letters, photographs, plans and maps, oral relations DOCUMENTATION

8 Taking care of selected object:  cleaning up the place  placing information about the object  persuading local authorities to renovate the monument  preparing a folder, leaflet or an information brochure  showing sightseeing groups around  preparing events; exhibitions, films  preparing a website ACTION

10 Each year in June a big showcase of the projects takes place in Warsaw. TRACES OF THE PAST

13 In the school year 2000-20012:  3000 schools from Poland  50 000 students  approx. 250 student’s projects every year FACTS AND FIGURES

15 EXAMPLES OF PROJECTS Penitential cross Students contacted the Provincial Monuments’ Conservator. The are trying to add the object to the relicts register, and thus provide it the legal protection. Young people from Szprotawa took care of penitential cross. In medieval times such crosses were built by murders on crime scenes to compensate their guilt. This is the only cross in the area. Some marks of a sword which could be a murder weapon werere found on the cross.

16 EXAMPLES OF PROJECTS Searching for multicultural traces of Zgierz – Jews with that issue. The youth organized a rally through the trails connected with Jews in Zgierz. Moreover, they adopted a monument – the Jewish cementary. But what they enjoyed most was preparing exhibitions and talking with people about the past events. The main aim of the project, prepared by Gimnazjum from Zgierz, is to disseminate information about Jews who had lived there before II World War. Jews brought so much into the local and national traditions and students are convinced that they should deal

17 German cemetry EXAMPLES OF PROJECTS Students took care of German cemetry settled around thier place. 90% of the cemetries were destroyed after II World War. These, which left were ruinded. Young people decided to make inventory of the graves, prepare documentation and remind others the place and forgoten History.

18 Following Arnoszt of Pardubice footsteps EXAMPLES OF PROJECTS In the framework of the programme students of Integration School Complex from Kłodzko have followed the history of a bishop of Prague – Arnoszt of Pardubice: artists’ patron, preacher and legal expert. Students adopted a church, where the grave of bishop is located. They searched for the traces of their hostorical heroes and monuments of Kłodzko. The result of their work is a play, which they performed in front of their schoolmates and invited guests.
