The plot has three main parts. Orientation The introduction of the main characters and the setting Complication A difficulty or problem that arises for one or more of the characters Resolution The way in which the difficulty or problem is overcome (usually occurs towards the end of the novel, and often in a dramatic or exciting way).

SETTING Where and when the story takes place Ancient civilisation or foreign land Planet in space in the next century Your own city or town Happening right now Can change as the story unfolds Time travel across centuries Travelling to other countries

Use of first person (‘I’) creates a sense of being there in the reader Dialogue makes the story move more quickly Use of the second person (‘you’) makes us feel as if the characters are talking to us Description slows the story down, but gives it colour & life

A scene in which two teenagers are fighting A scene in which a teenager is called into the principal’s office for fighting Choose whether to write the scene in the first, second or third person. Use the kind of language (slang, colloquial, formal) that the characters would use. Use dialogue and description to provide a ‘picture’ for the reader.
