Forensic Mental Health Policy Issues worrisome facts in Europe and Belgium There is scientific evidence that the number of Mentally Disordered Offenders (MDO) is continuously rising in prison MDOs in prison are deprived of the necessary treatment All over Europe is the demand for more forensic beds steadily increasing Re-institutionalisation of psychiatric patients in prison Most of them are past regular psychiatric patients

Mental Health Policy Issues proposals from EPA Forensic section Improvement of our forensic services, need for research and ROM (routine outcome measures) Enhancement of general psychiatric services in dealing with non-compliant or violent mentally ill patients Enhancing the relationship between general and forensic psychiatrists: training and liaison issues Global aim: prevent regular psychiatric patients of becoming a forensic patiënt and improve forensic services (inpatient and community services)

Forensic Mental Health Policy issues action in Belgium B uilding of 2 High security forensic Hospitals in Ghent and Antwerp (2013) Belgian National Health Service will in the future be in charge of the treatment of MDO…no longer a duty of the correctional services (Justice) The KAGB organizes a meeting in december 2011 on this forensic issue with the involved ministers
