Historical Investigation Suggested Formats

A “wicked” web site Pros It looks great Doesn’t have to be “linear” i.e. a set order to the info Allows you to include sounds, film, animations etc. 750 words, footnotes & bibliography still required Web pages should be stored on the network (Easty will show you where) A separate page for each sub topic & bibliography Could use iWeb Cons Difficult to create Things can go wrong when storing in a different location May take extra time to put together & hard to work on in different locations

A well-written essay Pros Simple to put together You have had lots of experience with this kind of task Cons It’s not as interesting as other presentation formats You need to be able to write well Must have a formal introduction, body & conclusion Should include headings and sub-headings Should include pictures, diagrams, maps, tables etc. Could be done on a SPCC Wiki Page

A striking poster or coffee table book Cons It’s not easy to carry around It’s not as easy to demonstrate deep thinking You need to get lots of materials 750 words, footnotes & bibliography still required Bibliography could be shown on the reverse side & footnotes should be shown on the front side A number of text boxes (labels) should be used rather than just pasting an essay to the poster Pros Don’t need to write a long essay Easier to do small bits at a time It looks great

An audio-visual presentation Cons You need all the right equipment & know how Filming & editing takes a very long time & hard to work on in class Difficult to find interesting film to go with what you say 750 spoken words of your own, footnotes & bibliography still required (on paper) Could be created in iMovie or Photobooth & uploaded to your SPCC Blog Should not exceed 15 minutes in duration Pros It’s very impressive You can include drama, film, sound tracks etc. Allows you to do an oral presentation without a live audience

A scale model museum display Cons It’s not easy to carry around or work on at school It’s not as easy to demonstrate deep thinking You need to get lots of materials Pros Don’t need to write a long essay People will want to look at it It looks great 750 words, footnotes & bibliography still required Labels or captions should be used identifying specific features rather than just including a page of information with the model Bibliography could be handed in separately but footnotes should be included with the captions

Film or Book Review Must be in the formal text type of a film or book review as you have been taught in English However, must evaluate the historical accuracy and value of the film or book NOT how enjoyable or how well put together it was Quotes from the book or film are not counted in the word count Pros Research may be more interesting Allows you to enjoy a book or film Cons You need to read the book or watch the film first Some information may be very difficult to verify or disprove

Group work with mates Pros Makes it easier to produce web sites & audio-visual presentations Allows you to pool ideas and resources Allows you to create a bigger and more impressive project Each group member must work on a different aspect (part) of the assignment and compose 750 words each Each group member must have a separate “process diary blog” There must be a separate bibliography & footnotes for each aspect (part) of the assignment Can be done together on a SPCC Wiki Page Cons Agreeing on what to do takes time Finding times and places to meet and discuss can be difficult Group members can let you down

A “hip” pod cast series 750 spoken words of your own, footnotes & bibliography still required (on paper) Could be created in either Audacity, or GarageBand, and uploaded to your SPCC Blog Should not exceed 15 minutes in duration Pros Saves you from a lot of writing You can include your favourite sound tracks etc. Allows you to do an oral presentation without a live audience Cons You need to be able to record to.mp3 & not possible in class Editing takes a long time Difficult to make it sound interesting

Creative Writing Cons It can be difficult to bring in facts and different historical perspectives Difficult to link back to a hypothesis Easy to get caught up with the story and forget to include the important historical information 750 spoken words of your own, footnotes & bibliography still required (on paper) Could be a fictitious diary, play, fictitious dialogue or speech, fictitious letter etc. Pros Allows you to be creative You can focus on the aspects of the topic you enjoy Can be more interesting for your audience Allows you to play with the language and ideas of the time
