Types Of Metal
2
Pure metals -Single element metal -Mined from the ground -Natural metal -Examples -Copper, lead, aluminum, iron, tin, gold, silver, titanium, nickel, platinum, tungsten, etc.
3
Alloy metals -Mixture of metals -Examples -Brass -Bronze -Steel -Non Ferrous -Contains no iron -Ferrous -Contains Iron
4
Non Ferrous (No Iron) -Aluminum-Al -Pure or alloy -Low melting point (1100’F) -Corrosion Resistant -Light weight -Hard to weld (TIG welding) DO NOT GRIND!!!
5
Copper-Cu -Pure or alloy -Soft -solders well -conducts heat and electricity well -Easy to work
6
Brass -Alloy (copper and zinc) -Solders well -Harder metal
7
Bronze -Alloy (copper and tin) -Solders and brazes well -Used in casting
8
Lead-Pb -Low Melting point (600’F) -Soft (Easy to hammer and shape) -Heavy metal -Poisonous Fumes
9
Ferrous Metals (Iron)-Fe -Cast iron -Heavy -Hard to work -Hard to weld
10
Wrought iron -Easy to work -Welds well -Expensive
11
Mild Steel -Easy to work -Welds well-Brazes well -Strong -Economical
12
Galvanized Steel -Mild steel -Has Galvanized coating -Solders well
13
Stainless Steel -Expensive -Corrosion resistant -Hard to weld -Hard to work
