Starting Pegasus Mail Will usually run when you start Windows See if Pegasus Mail is running: Look at the taskbar: If it’s not running, go to Start | Programs | StartUp, and then choose Pegasus Mail.

Sending Mail Click the “Compose” button. Address the message. Fill in the Subject. Write the message. Add attachments. Check option boxes. Click the “Send” button.

Addressing the Message In the “To:” field, type the recipient’s login name or full e-mail address. Separate multiple addresses with commas. Start typing, and the recipient’s e-mail address may be filled in for you from your addressbooks or the recently-used list. Or…

Addressing the Message Use the Addressing Centre Click the Addressing Centre button. Click one of the tabs: Addressbooks, Recently- used or Dlists (distribution lists). Double-click each recipient’s name to add his address to the Current addresses box. Click OK. Or…

Addressing the Message If you’re on a network, look up users or groups by clicking this button: Type part of the name and press “Search.” Double-click on the person you want, or click once and then click “Paste.” Hint: Clicking “Search” without typing anything brings up a list of all users and groups.

Adding Attachments Click Attachments tab or hit F7. Leave File Type and Encoding alone. Click Add Attachment. Select the desired file and click Open. Return to Message tab to send.

Reading Mail Open New Mail folder by clicking: Look at status indicators. Message has been read. Message has an attachment. A reply has been sent. Message has been forwarded. Double-click on a message to open it.

Reading Mail Header pane (separate from message text) Shows four lines by default (scrollable) Expand the pane (and return to normal size) by hitting the “z” key. Both expanded and normal views are adjustable by dragging the lower edge of the pane.

Reading Mail Monospaced font (Hit the F12 key) Each letter is the same width (like a typewriter). Useful when the sender created columns or pictures by using spaces for positioning Raw view (click the Raw View tab) See the message exactly as it was sent. Useful when Pegasus Mail cannot figure out how to display the message properly

Viewing Attachments Messages w/ attachments look like this: The Attachments tab and icon are enabled (clickable). Click on either one to go to the Attachments tab.

Viewing Attachments Single-clicking on some sections (those which contain plain text and graphics) will show a preview in the lower pane.

Viewing Attachments Select an attachment by single-clicking on it. Click “Open” to open a copy of the document. Click “Save” to save it permanently.

Handling Mail Reply to the message’s sender. Forward the message to another person. Copy the message to another folder. Move the message to another folder. Delete the message. Print the message.

Reply Options Choose whether to include the original message. Select recipient (goes to Reply-to or From address by default). Click “OK.”

Forwarding Messages Fill in “Forward to:” address. Choose type of forwarding. Choose whether to forward attachments. Click the “Forward” button.

Moving or Copying a Message Click on a folder to select it. Click the “Open” button. You can also maintain folders here.

Deleting a Message Click “Yes” to delete the message. If you delete a message by mistake, you may be able to recover it before you quit Pegasus Mail. Look in the Deleted Messages folder.

Printing a Message Select a printer. Choose pages and number of copies. Decide which message headers to print. Change header or footer if needed. Click “OK.”

Moving Between Messages If you Move or Delete a message, the next message will be displayed automatically. Otherwise, just click the blue triangle or hit the + (plus) key to show the next message. The red triangle and the - (minus) key go to the previous message.

Finding Your New Mail Later Warning! Your new mail, if it’s been opened, will automatically move to your Main folder when the New Mail folder is closed. You can choose to leave everything in New Mail, but too many messages there will slow down the program. New Mail Main

Managing Folders Click the Folders button on the tool- bar to open the Folders window.

Advanced Features Mail filtering (sort and process your mail based on its content or attributes) Move, copy, delete, print, highlight, forward, reply, save to a file, play a sound, pop up a message, run a program, etc. Useful for sorting mailing lists and automated notifications, deleting spam, clearing out old messages, etc.

Advanced Features Multiple address books and distribution lists Signature files (to automatically add text to the end of your message) POP3 and IMAP Access your personal e-mail accounts Download mail from your ISP, or read from your remote Inbox directly

Advanced Features Identities Alternative sets of program option settings Useful for sending e-mail in multiple “roles,” e.g. work vs. personal A typical use of identities would be to switch your personal name, e-mail address, signature, organization and outgoing mail server all at the same time.

Advanced Features Fancy formatting in messages Use fonts, colors, bullets, tables, pictures, backgrounds and links, just like on web pages Only use formatting when you know the recipient’s mail program can read it (and never on mailing lists).

Your E-Mail Responsibilities Comply with DPG Internet usage policies. Use good e-mail manners. See “Help | Etiquette guidelines” for tips. Read your messages at least daily. Answer messages promptly. Keep your folders cleaned out. Review all folders and messages at least monthly and delete, delete, delete!

Safe E-mail Practices Only open an attachment if… You know the sender and… You are expecting a document from him and… The attachment is a type you know about. Do not run programs (including screensavers) received in e-mail. Install an anti-virus program and keep it updated.

Safe E-mail Practices If you think you received an infected document, get help from MIS immediately. Do not open messages in a web browser unless you are certain of the source. Do not forward warning messages about viruses, scams or other threats.
