Problem Are black ink pens made of the same colors? Hypothesis I think that all black ink pens are made of exactly the same colors. Black Ink Investigation Results I found that different pens are made of different colors. Conclusion I discovered that My hypothesis was wrong. Black pens are not made of the same colors. Problem Are black felt tip pens made of the same colors? Hypothesis I think that all black felt tip pens are made of exactly the same colors. Black Felt Pen Investigation Results I found that different black felt pens are made of different colors. Conclusion I discovered that my hypothesis was wrong. Black felt pens are not made of the same colors. Procedure/ Materials PROCEDURE 1. I selected a topic to investigate. 2. I experimented with black pens to select the kind that would run. 3. I started my journal and recorded in it every day. 4. I developed my problem and hypothesis. 5. I bought my board and 4 different felt pens. 6. I bought coffee filters and cut them into rectangles. 7. I drew a straight line on each of the coffee filters using all of the different pens. 8. I dipped the end of the coffee filters into a cup of water. 9. I observed and recorded what happened to the ink. 10. I charted my data. 11. I completed my results and conclusion. 12. I listed my materials. 13. I wrote out my procedure. 14. I mounted all parts onto my board. 15. I added pictures and final touches to my board. Don’t forget your journal! Put it with your display. Vis-a- Vis CrayolaPilotPaper Mate MATERIALS 1. Felt Pens (Paper Mate, Vis-à-Vis, Pilot, Crayola) 2. Coffee Filters, cut into rectangles 3. Water and Cup 4. Supplies (Glue, Scissors, Black Marker, Display Board, Tape) 5. Photographs 6. Paper Today’s Plan…..

Step 1 Select a project topic based on an area of interest. POSSIBLY…. You received a letter in the mail that had gotten slightly wet from all the rain. You began to wonder why the black ink on the front of the letter no longer looked completely black and actually has some other colors around it.

Step 2 You have selected “Observation of Black Ink Pens and Water” as a beginning topic. Begin some project research to help you… Understand the topic better Express a problem Propose a hypothesis Do gather resources Do ask professionals Do perform some exploratory experiments

Journal Day 1: Today I began to really think about what black ink was made of. I noticed on my letters that some black ink had actually run from the rain water. I could see many other colors and not just black. I decided that I would look all over the house and find different black pens. I wrote with them on paper and got the paper wet. This helped me to come up with my problem. I realized that not all black pens would run in water, so I narrowed my pens to those that were felt tip and not permanent.

Step 3 State your Problem.  This is a scientific question to be solved. Are black felt tip pens made of the same colors?

Journal Day 2: Today I came up with my problem and selected 4 different types of black felt pens to test.  Vis-à-Vis  Crayola  Paper Mate  Pilot

Problem Are black felt tip pens made of the same colors? Black Felt Pen Investigation

Journal Day 3: Today I really started my project. We bought the board, pens, coffee filters, and labels for my project. I settled on a problem and I feel very confident that I can test it. I also started thinking about my hypothesis.

Step 4 State your Hypothesis.  This is a statement that attempts to answer the question that you asked in the problem.  Stick with the same hypothesis even if your experiment begins to show that your hypothesis is completely incorrect. I think that all black felt tip pens are made of exactly the same colors.

Problem Are black felt tip pens made of the same colors? Hypothesis I think that all black felt tip pens are made of exactly the same colors. Black Felt Pen Investigation

Journal Day 4: I was so excited because today I got to actually perform the experiment. I cut up the coffee filters, drew a line on the coffee filter, and dipped it into water. I had to redo some of the strips because I got them too wet and it washed the ink away. I wrote down the results that I found. It was so interesting to see so many different colors. I wasn’t expecting that!

I recorded my results in my journal to start. Here is what I found: Vis-à-VisCrayolaPilotPaper Mate

Journal Day 5: Today I thought about the best way to display my results. I decided that I would put a table on my display board and tape the coffee filter papers to the board as well.

Step 5 Report and display your Results. Results are stated and displayed. They reflect your observation of what happened in your experiment. Use graphs, data tables, visual samples, or anything that makes the results more clear. I found that different black felt pens are made of different colors.

Problem Are black felt tip pens made of the same colors? Hypothesis I think that all black felt tip pens are made of exactly the same colors. Black Felt Pen Investigation Results/ Data I found that different black felt pens are made of different colors. Vis-à- Vis CrayolaPilotPaper Mate

Journal Day 6: I worked on my conclusion. I realized that my hypothesis was wrong. Black felt pens are not all made of the same colors. Sometimes the colors are a mixture of many different colors. I did some Internet research find out just exactly why this happens. I found that black dyes are commonly made of many colors. These colors are made of atoms that attract to each other. This attraction actually holds the black color together. This makes the ink look black.

When these atoms are exposed to water, just as they were when I dipped them into water, the color atoms were more attracted to the water molecules than to each other, so each color separately began to pull away from the dark black line. I was actually watching atoms move. I could see this clearly because the atoms were different colors. The Pilot didn’t show a really dramatic change. I think that this was because it had a really fine point. I should try this again and make the line really thick.

Step 6 State your Conclusion. Your conclusion is a reflection on your hypothesis. Was it correct? Was it incorrect? I discovered that my hypothesis was wrong. Black felt pens are not made of the same colors.

21 Journal Day 7: All that I have left to do is complete my display board. I am going to list my material and procedure. I am also going to add some of the pictures my mom took of my experiment to make it really colorful.

Step 7 List your Materials.  Make a list of all of the materials that you used in your experiment. 1. Felt Pens (Paper Mate, Vis-à-Vis, Crayola, Pilot) 2. Coffee Filters cut into rectangles 3. Water and Bowl 4. Supplies (Glue, Scissors, Black Marker, Display Board, Tape) 5. Photographs 6. Paper

Step 8 State your Procedure.  Write down step by step everything that you did to complete your experiment from beginning to end. 1.I selected a topic to investigate. 2.I experimented with black pens to select the kind that would run. 3.I started my journal and recorded in it every day. 4.I developed my problem and hypothesis. 5.I bought my board and 4 different felt pens. 6.I bought coffee filters and cut them into rectangles. 7.I drew a straight line on each of the coffee filters using all of the different pens. 8.I dipped the end of the coffee filters into a cup of water. 9.I observed and recorded what happened to the ink. 10.I charted my data. 11.I completed my results and conclusion. 12.I listed my materials. 13.I wrote out my procedure. 14.I mounted all parts onto my board. 15.I added pictures and final touches to my board.
