PRIMARY SOURCES VS. SECONDARY SOURCES What’s the difference? Think of a definition and example of both Primary source is… a document or physical object which was written or created during the time under study. Secondary source is… A source that interprets and analyzes primary sources. These sources are one or more steps removed from the event. Secondary sources may have pictures, quotes or graphics of primary sources in them.

CLAIM TEST TYPE #1: AUTHORITY You should believe me because….I’m an expert!

CLAIM TEST #2: INTUITION I have a “gut reaction” about that. It isn’t magical though; it is formed out of past experiences and knowledge!

CLAIM TEST #3: EVIDENCE I am going to use tools, equations, measurements, data, direct observations, reports…

CLAIM TEST #4: LOGIC I am going to figure out [interpret] the meaning of facts by combining it with what I already know. Using logic we draw conclusions…are those conclusions always correct?

EARLY HUMANS ARTICLE Choose 4 colors; each color will represent one type of way to assess claims Colored pencils, highlighters, pens, etc. As you read the article, pay attention for Different ways to assess the claims that the author uses to support their argument For each type of claim test, use the specific color associated. (underline or highlight the claim test type) Also take content notes in your journals as you read. Cornell Style or Outline Notes One notes section on each article section
