t A recent study confirms that the war for talent continues, despite the economic downturn. t 100 percent of the executives polled by Accenture stated that they faced challenges in retaining workers and boosting performance. t The companies who said they needed to take initiative to retain employees, only one quarter are actually doing anything …."

t The workforce is shrinking. Unemployment is increasing. t Working women and baby boomers boosted the growth of the labor force in the 1970s, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. But that growth has since been on the decline and is expected to continue shrinking through the first quarter of the century. t The biggest part of the slowdown is expected to occur from 2015 to 2025 as baby boomers retire. The youngest members of that generation turn 65 in 2025.

Quotations from Chairman Powell: A Leadership Primer

In 1989, General Colin L. Powell became chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, achieving the nation’s highest military post. He retired from the Joint Chiefs of Staff in 1993. In 2001, he became Secretary of State. Former Secretary of State Colin Powell

LESSON 1 "Being responsible sometimes means pissing people off." Good leadership involves responsibility to the welfare of the group. Trying to get everyone to like you is a sign of mediocrity.

LESSON 2 "Never neglect details." Strategy equals execution. Good leaders delegate and empower others liberally, but they pay attention to details, every day.

LESSON 3 "You don't know what you can get away with until you try." It's easier to get forgiveness than permission. Good leaders don't wait for official blessings to try things out THAT ARE WITHIN THE RULES. GOOD LEADERS ARE PRUDENT, NOT RECKLESS.

LESSON 4 "Keep looking below surface appearances. Don't shrink from doing so (just) because you might not like what you find."

LESSON 5 "Endeavors succeed or fail because of the people involved. Only by attracting of the people involved. Only by attracting the best people will you accomplish great deeds." Your best assets are people.

LESSON 6 "Never let your ego get so close to your position that to your position that when your position goes, your ego goes with it."

LESSON 7 "Perpetual optimism is a force multiplier." The ripple effect of a leader's enthusiasm and optimism is awesome.

LESSON 8 "Have fun…. Take leave when you've earned it: Spend time with your families. Corollary: surround yourself with people who take their work seriously, but not themselves, those who work hard and play hard." and play hard."

LESSON 9 "Command is lonely.“ Harry Truman was right. Whether you're a CEO or the temporary head of a project team, the buck stops here. You can encourage participative management and bottom- up employee involvement, but ultimately, the essence of leadership is the willingness to make the tough, unambiguous choices. Many non- leaders flinch from this responsibility.

LESSON 10 "Powell's Rules for Picking People:” Look for intelligence and judgment, and most critically, a capacity to anticipate, to see around corners. Also look for loyalty, integrity, a high energy drive, a balanced ego, and the drive to get things done. How often do our recruitment and hiring processes tap into these attributes? More often than not, we ignore them in favor of length of resume, degrees and prior titles. Good leaders stack the deck in their favor right in the recruitment phase.

“Leadership is the art of accomplishing more than the science of management says is possible.”

I hope these lessons provide you the same road to success that they provided Secretary of State Powell. Good luck!
