THEOCRACY God is the ruler A ruler on earth that has a direct relationship with God like the Pope in Vatican City— appointed by god Vatican City

MONARCHY A king or a queen Gain power through inheritance Constitutional (limited government) or absolute monarchy (does not have to follow a constitution) England has a constitutional monarchy

DICTATORSHIP One person is in charge—strict obedience Often gains power through force and military dominance Non democratic—there are no individual freedoms Easier to make decisions because only one person is deciding things Dictator—Hitler, N. Korea

DEMOCRACY Government that is run by the people People gain power by deciding to have a democracy Direct (people make the decisions) Representative (people elect someone to make the decisions) Progress can be slow because… more people making decisions=more disagreements The United States

OLIGARCHY A small group of elite people are in charge of the government Often times a family—can be through inheritance or popularity Can be corrupt or not Sparta in Greece
