BENCHMARK 3: SHORT STORY Skills Review
2
Compare and Contrast Compare = similarities Contrast = differences Venn Diagrams are used to show comparisons and contrasts between 2 things. To contrast, you must show how each item is different; not just one. The man in the cave was starving, so he is different. [Different from what?] The man in the cave was starving, so he is different from the healthy men who used to live in the cities.
3
Compare an Original to a Summary What is most important to have in a summary? More important: main ideas, main characters, motives for main characters to move the plot, the main conflict, the climax. Less important: minor characters, quotes, details about the setting, too specific details, smaller events or conflicts that don’t move the plot forward, mood and author tone, biased analysis or interpretation [that is for a criticism; a true summary is objective]
4
Setting Time and place Establishes mood (readers’ feeling towards the piece of writing, or the atmosphere)
5
Characterization Dynamic Character “Round character” A character who is changed by the conflict of a story Usually a main character Static Character “Flat character” A character who is unchanged by the story Usually a minor character who often creates conflict for the main character to react to.
