What is a short story? Short, concentrated fictional prose narrative Usually focuses on one main plot, one main character, and one main theme The plot follows a basic pattern. – Plot = series of related events that make up the story

Exposition/Basic Situation The opening of the story that provides information about the setting, the characters, and their conflict

Rising Action/Complications The series of conflicts or crises that lead to the climax of the story – Conflict = struggle or clash between opposing characters or opposing forces Internal conflict – takes place entirely in a character’s own mind; a mental struggle External conflict – a character struggles with an outside force, such as another character, society as a whole, or something in nature

Climax The turning point in the story, usually when the conflict is decided one way or another Key scene in the story – Most emotional and intense moment in the story Peak of the plot diagram

Falling Action The action that occurs after the climax Intended to bring the story to a satisfying end

Resolution Occurs at the end All the struggles are over The tying together of loose ends

Elements of a Short Story Setting – the time and place of the story’s action; includes ideas, customs, values, and beliefs of the time and culture Characters – the people or actors in the story and their roles Protagonist – the main character; not always the good guy Antagonist – the character who opposes or is against the main character; not always the bad guy

Elements of a Short Story Point of View – the relationship of the narrator, or storyteller, to the story – Perspective – Who is telling the story? Omniscient – “all-knowing” – narrator knows everything about the characters and their problems, including what they are thinking First Person – one character is telling the story; readers know what the this person knows; uses “I” Third Person Limited – narrator plays no role in the story; knows the thoughts of one character

Elements of a Short Story Plot – series of related events that make up a story Theme – the central idea of a work of literature – what the author wishes to reveal about the subject of the story Tone – attitude writer takes toward the subject, character, or audience Mood – the story’s atmosphere or the feeling it evokes
