2 1. A Senator’s term is 6 years. 2. Elections for representatives are held every two years to give the people a chance to vote for new representatives. 3. Two main roles of Congress are to make the nation’s laws and control the government’s spending. 4. They would have a joint committee meeting and compromise to come up with one bill. 5. Congress has the power to declare war; the president has control over the troops.

3 6. The president can propose laws; he also can pass or veto bills. 7. State department; Treasury department 8. Treason; tax evasion; kidnapping 9. The authority of the Supreme Court has been defined by the constitution and by Supreme Court decisions. 10. Marbury v. Madison gave the Supreme Court the power of Judicial Review.

4 11. Senators- 30 years; Representatives- 25 years. 12. If an official gets impeached, they are then tried by the Senate. 13. A citizen can write letters to their congressman; sign petitions; testify before Congress to support or oppose bills. 14. In case of a veto, Congress can override it with a 2/3 vote of both houses. 15. US treaties are negotiated by the president but must be ratified by the Senate.

5 16. EOP- Executive Office of the President 17. The president presents his legislative goals in the State of the Union Address. 18. There are 9 justices on the Supreme Court. 19. Judicial Review is the power of the Supreme Court to review laws passes by Congress or acts of the president and declare them unconstitutional. 20. The Supreme Court can declare any state law or action unconstitutional.
