Aims of the evening: To outline the benefits of Higher Education. (Katie Fowles SHU) To understand the timescales involved in the UCAS application process. (Mark Evans Silverdale School) To be made aware of the current financial arrangements for students going into Higher Education. (Dave Berry HEPP) To have a chance to ask questions

The process of UCAS application at Silverdale UCAS Convention June 19 th - @ Motor point Arena (1.30-3.30) Independence Day July 6th - @SHU Early applicants – visits to Oxford/Cambridge July Registered onto UCAS system in July as part of Long Listing Long listing Monday 13 th July Personal statement drafts worked on over Summer holiday Personal details section of the UCAS website filled in over holiday

Autumn Term 2015 Make appointments with Tutors during PSHE time and morning tutorial. Form Tutor - Key role -Whole process done on line. Head of Sixth checks all forms. All early applications ready by 7 th October. Applications are dealt with on a push system. Student applications must be processed by the internal deadline of 7 th December.

Spring Term 2016 Students wait for offers. Some students will be asked for interviews. When made offers must decide on – one as CF (Confirmed First choice) and – one as CI (Confirmed Insurance) – By date specified – updates from UCAS enable monitoring.

No Offers/Anomalies UCAS extra UCAS Adjust Clearing – after results Deferred entry – prefer students to apply this year Can decline all offers, no compulsion to take up places.

What we will do Assemblies to give support regarding online completion of form. Provide individual guidance and support. Direct access to Careers Advice. Write high quality, open references. Finance talk in assembly and application packs given out during PSHE sessions. A team on hand to provide support on results day.

What Parents can do to help Monitor the process at home. Encourage students to meet the deadlines. Talk through options and encourage students to research fully (2 open days in school time). Consult with the school as necessary on any areas of concern e.g. visits, final offer decisions, etc.

Finally, what can the students do? Take responsibility for the process. Meet deadlines/manage their time well Talk to their Tutors and Sixth form staff. Communicate with their parents and keep them up to date. Check any additional requirements that might be necessary for their application (BMAT/LNAT etc)
