MITOSIS
3
What is Mitosis? A period of nuclear cell division resulting in 2 daughter cells, each cell containing a COMPLETE set of chromosomes. Why does Mitosis occur? To replace the dying cells with new cells that are “exact” copies of the old cells.
4
Where does Mitosis occur? Mitosis occurs in all somatic (NON-SEX) cells. What type of cell division takes place in SEX cells? MEIOSIS: Cell division resulting in 4 gamete cells, each containing HALF of the parental cell’s genetic material.
5
5 PHASES OF CELL CYCLE & MITOSIS ACRONYM: IPMAT I = INTERPHASE (NOT part of mitosis) P = PROPHASE: 1st and longest phase of mitosis. M = METAPHASE: 2nd phase. A = ANAPHASE: 3rd phase. T = TELOPHASE: 4th phase.
6
When does Mitosis occur? Interphase (G1, S, & G2)
7
I = INTERPHASE Visible Nucleolus Nucleus (unable to see chromosomes …BUT they are currently REPLICATING!)
8
P = PROPHASE Chromosomes condense or become visible Nuclear envelope & nucleolus disappear Spindle fibers develop from centrioles
9
M = METAPHASE Sister chromatids line up on equator of cell with help from spindle fibers.
10
Short Quiz: Mind around Mitosis? A. B. C. Acronym for cell cycle and mitosis?
11
A = ANAPHASE Chromosomes (sister chromatids) are split and pulled to opposite ends of the cell by ______ ______attached to a __________. spindle fibers centriole
12
T = TELOPHASE Two daughter cells are formed New double membrane begins to form between 2 nuclei.
13
Mitosis Madness Quiz A. B. C.D. E.

Bonus Question:What phase of mitosis is shown in this background slide? Explain your answer.

Way to go Mitosis Minds!! Job well done!!
