What you can’t bring in… Correction fluid Highlighters Pens in any color other than black and blue Study materials Blank paper Fear Narwhals

What will the proctor give you? A test booklet – Paper 1 – directions and two pairs of unseen texts – Paper 2 – directions six thematic questions An answer booklet

Answer Booklet Protocol Fill out the cover with your candidate number Write ONLY inside the pink box Write ONLY in blue or black ink No correction fluid, put a single line through errors Put a single diagonal line through planning/outlining or draft materials. Ask for a second booklet as needed Write double spaced for easy editing

What is Reading Time? 5 minutes to read over the exam – cover to cover! Read and meditate on all – directions – texts – questions – footnotes – bibliographical information MAKE THE HARD CHOICE (select a text pairing/question and stick to it)

Manage your time… Locate the clock in the room! Annotations and planning should take up half your time. If you have planned well, writing is fast. You should have time to read over the entire essay and edit.

Paper 1 Comparative Analysis of Two Unseen Texts – You have a choice between two pairings – Read the directions AND the pairings. – The directions explain the exact requirements! – Ask yourself WTFIB – Try writing an IB question based on the text pairings, the directions, and your knowledge of IB topics. This is a GREAT hook. – Write a thesis that answers your IB question.

Paper 1 Hints Don’t forget to use direct textual support (you have the texts in front of you!) Don’t forget to take into careful consideration any footnotes and bibliographical information. IB gives you that information ON PURPOSE! Use The Big 5. Outline and plan meticulously before writing.

Paper 1 Directions Analyse, compare and contrast the following two texts. Include comments on the similarities and differences between the texts and the significance of context, audience, purpose and formal and stylistic features.

Paper 2 Thematic Questions and Part 3 Texts – Answer one of the six questions provided. – Answer using two of the three texts studied during Part 3 (Kafka, Wilde, Orwell) – Draw on your knowledge of contexts and language. – Break down the selected question thoroughly. – Make sure your thesis answers the question. – Make sure your essay proves your thesis!

Paper 2 Hints Know your texts and contexts. Know a handful of strong relationships between the texts and contexts. Be aware of both context and language use for all the texts. While memorizing passages from the text is not necessary, you should be detailed and correct in your paraphrasing and summaries.

Paper 2 Directions Answer one essay question only. You must base your answer on at least two of the Part 3 works you have studied. Answers which are not based on a discussion of at least two Part 3 works will not score high marks. Your answer should address the ways in which language and context contribute to your reading of each work.
