1 Ms. Kuhl’s Earth Science Class PTSA Curriculum Night September 4, 2014

2 SSR Silent Sustained Reading Students must have a reading book with them at all times.

3 Agenda

4 Agenda  Students copy the daily assignment into their agenda books, as the class website is not always updated daily.  Therefore, lack of computer/internet access is not a valid excuse for missing/late assignments.

5 Agenda  ALL Students are to daily record assignments in all classes in the agenda book.

6 Agenda The agenda book also serves as a hall pass with a teacher's signature. If lost, a new agenda needs to be purchased from the front office for $5.00.

7 Help Sessions Early morning help sessions are on Wednesday mornings at 8:15. Students must notify the teacher and request a pass (teacher signature in agenda) by Tuesday afternoon. Must have something specific to work on.

8 Conferences Scheduled on an as-needed basis.

9 Daily Routines After writing in their agendas, students copy and answer the warm-up questions onto their paper, if posted. Discuss the warm-up questions as a class. They will be collected at various times as a classwork grade.

10 Late Work – Homework Only 1 day = 15 points off 2 days = 20 points off 3 days = 25 points off 4 days = 30 points off 5 or more days = grade not to exceed 50%  No late assignments are taken the week of progress reports/final grade – science homework only.  Classwork assignments, projects, etc. – follow WOO guidelines.  It is the student’s responsibility to keep up with late work and missing assignments do to absence, etc.  “Missing or incomplete science assignment” in agenda

12 Grade Updates Students are always able to check their current science grades and missing work in class. Additionally, parents are able to check their student’s grades via the ParentPortal. Sign-up in person is required, as well as a photo ID. You may sign-up in the sixth grade office or reception desk M-F 8:30 – 4:30.

20 Additional Copies If a student misplaces an assignment/paper, he or she will need to print an additional copy from my website either at home or at school.

21 Science Weighted Average Summative/ Major Assessments..................48% Classwork (Quiz, Labs, etc.) ……………………..35% Homework ………………………………………..5% Interim……………………………………..2% Comprehensive Final ………………...............10% **Final/interim are county mandated comprehensive tests given at the middle & end of the semester.

22 Quizzes and Tests Quizzes are primarily over vocabulary terms and are roughly twenty questions. Tests are over the various units of study and students are given a study guide to aid in preparation. Review activities are scheduled in class during the week leading up to a test Tests/quizzes are announced roughly five days prior to the actual date.

23 Science Textbook? In my class, the science textbook is used as an additional resource for the students. However, the majority of content comes from class notes, discussions, and experiments. The text is mainly a supplement

24 Science Textbook? Students are not issued individual hardcopies of the science textbook Students have access to the science textbook online through the MYeCLASS portal.

25 Science Textbook? All students at the beginning of the year were given information on how to initialize their MYeCLASS account and what to change their password to. (sticker in their agenda).

27 After initial log-in: Username: student # Password: tms(last 4 digits of student #) and the capitalized letter of the student’s last name Example: tms2006K

28 MYeCLASS If your student is still having trouble accessing MYeCLASS after following the directions. Please have the student go to the media center for assistance during homeroom.

35 Highlighted Lessons  Science Fair Projects  All Trickum Middle School students are required to participate in the Science Fair process either as a small group (3-4 students) or individually.

36 Discipline  School wide discipline system 1.Verbal warning 2.Teacher/student conference 3.Parent contact 4.Teacher detention 5.Referral **Severe discipline infractions may automatically warrant a referral (fighting, etc.)
