Grid Project Enlarging an imaging of a historical figure

Chuck Close American artist he began copying black-and-white photographs of a female nude in colour on to canvascanvas Soon he abandoned this approach he began using a black-and-white palette Finding this subject too interesting, he turned to neutral, black-and-white head-and-shoulder photographs as models, which he again reproduced in large scale on canvas He incorporated every detail of the photograph and allowed himself no interpretative freedom

Chuck Close He continued in the black-and-white style until 1970, when he began to use color again With a similarly limited range of model photographs, he experimented with various types of color marking Other techniques included the use of fingerprint marks and pulp paper fragments

Steps: Grid photograph Grid drawing paper Observe each square one at a time assessing the different value scale. –concentrate on the value of a square in the photograph and replicate the value in the corresponding square on their drawing. – Those who are able to see the value will be most successful –Note –Note: you may want to practice different values on scrap paper As you work, study your work from a distance from time to time as you work.

Evaluation Did you show an awareness and understanding of the work of chuck Close? Can you describe the qualities in Chuck Close did you admire? Did you develop an understanding of scale and proportion by studying the work of chuck close? Did you successfully use the ruler to make a grid and enlarge a photograph to scale? Did you perceive value and reproduce that using line, texture and pattern? Did you develop contrast?
