The American Revolution Chapter Seven The Early Years of the War Section 1(B)
2
After The Siege of Boston ► The British goal was to occupy coastal cities so the navy could land troops and supplies. ► Washington had a hunch the next place Britain would go would be New York.
3
The Battle of Long Island ► Washington’s instincts were correct. ► General Howe arrived in New York City along with ships, supplies, and thousands of Hessians mercenaries. ► Washington was undermanned and outgunned during this battle for the city and it’s ports.
4
Patriots Retreat ► After several months of fighting in New York the Continental Army was forced back into New Jersey. ► Washington knew it was important to attack again quickly and rescue a failing moral of his troops.
5
Victory at Trenton ► Washington crossed the Delaware on Christmas day of 1776. ► His troops defeated 900 Hessian soldiers and gained much needed supplies. ► With Washington’s victory it would attract new recruits and a sense they could win the war.
6
British Strategy ► The British believed if they could cut off New England from the rest of the colonies they would win the war. ► By controlling the Hudson River Valley this could be accomplished. ► The plan was for three armies coming from different directions to meet in Albany and control the Valley.
7
Burgoyne’s March ► General Burgoyne led troops south from Canada. ► The countryside was filled with patriots who cut down trees and burned crops to slow British forces. ► The General realized he was not fighting an army, but an entire country.
8
The Other Two Armies ► St. Legar was advancing to Albany when he met American forces along the way and was defeated. ► Howe instead of proceeding to Albany decided to capture Philadelphia. ► Howe defeats Washington in two battles and occupies Philadelphia. ► Both Howe and Legar fail to meet Burgoyne in Albany.
9
Battle of Saratoga ► Burgoyne’s army low on supplies must push forward without the other two armies. ► Burgoyne was far from victorious, low on supplies and men he is defeated by the patriot forces. ► The victory stopped the British from dividing the states and isolating New England. ► It also showed the rest of Europe that with their help the Americans may have a great chance to win the war.
