2 The Seven Years’ War

3 Austrian Succession -Austrian emperor Charles VI died without a male heir -He leaves the throne to daughter Maria Theresa -Fredrick II of Prussia does not believe that she should be their leader -Fredrick decided to invade Austrian Silesia -France also enters war against Austria (traditional enemies) -Maria Theresa allies with Great Britain

4 Austrian Succession -Prussia seized (took over) Silesia -France occupied the Austrian Netherlands -In Asia, France took Madras in India from the British -In North America, the British captured French fortress of Louisbourg at the entrance to the St. Lawrence River -Exhausted by war, they signed the Treaty of Aix-la- Chapelle in 1748 -Guaranteed the return of all land to original owners

5 War in Europe -Prussia refused to return Silesia leading to another war -Maria Theresa rebuilt her army and tried to make friends with France -France left Prussia and made allies with Austria -Russia believed this to be a threat and allied with France & Austria -Great Britain allies with Prussia -Fredrick of Prussia was tactical genius of war

6 War in Europe -Peter III of Russia admired Fredrick so much that he withdrew Russian troops from Prussian lands -This created a stalemate (a stand still) -War ended in 1763 -All lands returned except Silesia & Austria officially recognized Prussia’s control of Silesia -France returned Madras to Britain after war, but struggle in India continued -The Treaty of Paris in 1763 left India to the British

7 War in North America -French occupied Canada & Louisiana for trade (fur, leather, fish, & timber) -British had 13 colonies -Fought over the gulf of St. Lawrence & Ohio River valley -Called the French & Indian War -French threatened to cut off British settlers by expanding into land -French gained native support because they weren’t trying to settle the area

8 War in North America -In the beginning, the French had many victories -Britain regained power with their navy -Prime Minister of Great Britain, William Pitt, believed they had to stop the French from destroying their colonial empire -In 1759, British forces were defeated on the Plains of Abraham outside Quebec -Britain seized Montreal, the Great Lakes area, and the Ohio River Valley

9 War in North America -The French were forced to make peace -By the Treaty of Paris, France gave Canada & land east of the Mississippi River to England -Spain (ally of France) gave Florida to Britain, and in return, France gave Spain the Louisiana territory

10 Political Cartoons Many political cartoons are created to get the people to understand issues. Often times, people choose a character that illustrates certain characteristics. They decide to play off their physical characteristics and exaggerate them. Let’s brainstorm.
