Kinds of Graphics and Composition

Vector Graphics Vs Bitmapped Graphics

Composed of dots Resolution is DPI Scanned Images Composed of dots Resolution is DPI Scanned Images Bitmapped Graphics

Graphics that contain a number of hard-edged lines will appear stair-stepped or rough when saved in a bit- mapped format. Quality

Composed of individual objects that can be individually manipulated. This type of graphic can be resized without loss of resolution. Vector Graphics

Composition refers to how things are laid out or put together on the page to create a visually stimulating page. Composition

The Rule of Thirds The rule of thirds divides the composition into "thirds" both vertically and horizontally. The foreground of the example is divided into "thirds" horizontally by the two pieces of barbed wire. The composition is divided into "thirds" vertically by the center fence post taking up the "middle third" and the background on the left and right of the post filling the other 'two thirds."

Refers to different kinds of visual content. Variety makes things interesting, without it we experience monotony or boredom. Variety

Differences between any of the elements being described. Contrast can be seen in size, color, line, and tone. Contrast

Light Lighting adds dramatic effect to photographs. Usually you want the light source behind you when shooting photographs. "Backlighting" occurs when the light source is in front of the lens, creating dark silhouettes.

Adding visual varieties that resemble others in the composition. Rhythm occurs through repetition. Rhythm

Formal Balance Formal balance is equal or symmetrical balance. Each side of the vertical center of the photograph has equal weight and similar or exactly the same shape, texture, and value contrast.

Informal Balance Informal or "asymmetrical" Balance is uneven or unequal balance. The objects have nearly the same "visual weight" on either side of the vertical center of the photograph composition, but are different in size, shape, texture, or value.

Arrangement or grouping is placing main objects close together. Arranging a group puts emphasis on the group. Arrangement

Create drama within groupings. Elements are not visually comfortable with each other. Items seem to collide. Tension

Having focus in composition. Clarity can use lights and darks to make items stand out. Items also in focus as opposed to blurry. Clarity

Framing Framing is a technique that creates the illusion of depth and draws the viewer's eye to a focal point of interest. The plant branch helps draw the viewer' eye to the cat's face while creating a feeling of depth in the composition of the photograph.
