Victor Vasarely (1908-1997) Hungarian born in 1908 Moved to France in 1930 (considered a French Painter) Worked as a Graphic Designer Early work was in complex black & white patterns Added intense color contrasts later in work “Father” of OP ART Died in 1997

Optical Art Op Art is comprised of illusion and often appears – to the human eye – to be moving or breathing due to its precise, mathematically- based composition. This art movement evolved around 1965.

Is Abstract (not concrete/realistic) Uses Visual Contrast (A large difference between two things; for example, rough and smooth, yellow and purple, light and shadow. ) Comprised of Shapes geometric (square, triangle, circle) and organic (irregular in outline) often appears – to the human eye – to be moving or breathing due to its precise, mathematically-based composition

Any shapes and/or forms based on math principles, such as square/cube, circle/sphere, triangle/cone, pyramid etc… Another name for color. The lightness or darkness of a color. The brightness or dullness of a color.

Project: Fold 9 x 9 paper in ½ and then in ½ again to form 16 squares. Brainstorm a simple design unit can be made using circles, triangles, and squares. (refer to print) Pick a pair of complementary colors: red/green, blue/orange or violet/yellow. Design op art pattern using crayons and one or two design units. (vary placement & arrangement to draw the eye around the design)
