Lesson 5 Objectives Explain the differences between digital media and multimedia Name and define the elements of multimedia and digital media Explain the different uses of digital media applications Discuss digital media applications on the Web Identify various K-12 software applications Specify what is meant by an interactive media Examine the uses of digital media authoring software programs Explain why digital media applications are important for education Read Read Chapter 5 in the textbook. Assignment PowerPoint allows you to have an outline in front of you and your audience while presenting content and information. You will create an interactive PowerPoint slideshow that children can self navigate without being lectured to. In other words, you will create a stand alone presentation that students will engage with alone. Optional Activities The following activities might be optional depending on your instructor. Consult the instructor or their syllabus to determine if you need to do any of the following. Chapter Tests By now you should have finished Chapter 4 test located in the Assessment Tool. Take it as many times as you like. The top score will be recorded in the grade book. Taking the chapter tests will prepare you for the final which will take questions from the chapter tests. Discussions Now that chapter 4 is over, let's discuss online some of your thoughts. You can follow the links in this learning module to get there or go to "Chapter 4 - Hardware for Educators " in the Discussions Tool on the left in the Course Tools menu. What is Digital Media? This Interactive multimedia
Multimedia incorporates a variety of elements, including text, graphics, audio, video, and animation Digital media technologies allow users to create new forms of interaction, expression, communication, and entertainment in a digital format Click read Studies indicate that students retain 20% of what they see; 30% of hat they hear… thus 50% of what they see and hear. When a student has a chance to Hear, See, and Interact with learning environment he can retain as much as 80% of info. Digital media applications provide that interactive learning environment which makes them powerful tools for teaching and learning. This Interactive multimedia software application helps students learn about the human body Chapter 5: Integrating Digital Media and Educational Software Applications

What is Digital Media? Another important reason for student’s increased retention when digital media is used is that they become active participants in the learning process instead of passive recipients of info. Text Create words, sentences, and paragraphs Textual effects Menus Click read Any clickable object in a digital media presentation can function as a link Chapter 5: Integrating Digital Media and Educational Software Applications

What is Digital Media? Graphics

What is Digital Media? Video (sample: Muscle building or Pompeii)
Photographic images that are played back at speeds of 15 to 60 frames per second and provide the appearance of full motion Video compression Moving Pictures Experts Group (MPEG) CODEC MAGpie (sample) Text, graphics, animations, audio, and video Read A codec is a device or computer program capable of encoding and/or decoding a digital data stream or signal. The word codec is a of ' co mpressor-dec ompressor' or, most commonly, ' co der-dec oder'. Related concepts. Teaching your students about their body… getting ready for a soccer game… might this have a bigger impact on them learning about how to lift vs. you just telling them? Click on muscle building. MPEG is the video standard… motion pictures experts group… most recent is mpeg4 and can be read by most players… so when saving video… save as mpegs so all your students can open easily. Consider MAGpie for making your digital media ADA compliant…. Banning Cell Phones in School Most people would never consider cutting in line at the cafeteria or stealing somebody else's personal parking space in the parking lot. This courtesy seems to elude many people when it comes to cellular phone etiquette . People take calls during class, meetings, doctor appointments, or other inappropriate times. Psychologists have found that it may not be the cell phone users’ speech volume that annoys us, but rather that the person is having a seemingly one-way conversation with no one, which is a much more difficult background noise for the brain to filter out. Recently, cell phones have taken on a new personality in schools — some students have been using phones to plan disturbances, fights, and gatherings — students call or text message each other and a situation quickly escalates from involving two students to involving twenty or more students. Many schools have told students they must leave their cell phones in their lockers and only use them during breaks; other schools have completely banned cell phones usage on school campus. Should cell phone use in schools be banned or limited in their use? Why or why not? Should simple rules of etiquette for cell phone use be more publicized or enforced? Why or why not? If so, by whom? Have one person report back on what their group discovered/decided… .

As a result, these research findings are revealing that the learning environment these students are placed in does not match their cognitive or digital learning style, which then affects motivation and achievement. Have some of these students rewired their brains to multitask? Can they can read s, send instant messages and text messages over handheld devices, speak to one another in short sentences, and continue to watch movies and participate in multiple conversations, all while finishing their homework? When we try to place these students in the traditional learning environment, are we working against their cognitive or digital learning style? Creating and Presenting Digital Media Presentations
Digital media presentations involves producing various digital media elements, defining the elements’ relationships to each other, and then sequencing them in an appropriate order Microsoft PowerPoint Photo Story Apple iLife Read Click on picture One of the true values of digital media in education is its ability to empower teachers and students to develop stories using various forms of self expression. This is evident if you take a look at the iLife software suite that is loaded free on all Apple computers. iLife is an integration software application suite that includes support for telling stories using photographs (iPhoto), music (iTunes and Garage Band), and video (iMovie). Support for today’s portable lifestyle is found on the iPod tools. Keynote, a presentation tool, can also be made to integrate with these storytelling products through its support for various forms of outputs, including QuickTime movies and Flash runtime files. What makes iLife products so powerful are their ability to integrate easily with one another and their ease of use.
