The ability to trace a finished products or a raw material through all stages of production, processing and distribution What is traceability? Downstream traceability for pet food produced and delivered Upstream traceability for raw materials used How? 1)To protect animal and human health 2)To enable efficient withdrawal or recall of products 3)To provide information on quality problems 4)To comply with EU legislation Why traceability?

4.1 Registration and approval Registration and/or approval is mandatory for pet food plants according to: Regulation 183/2005 Registration of all operators Approval if using vitamin A, vitamin D, copper, selenium as such Regulation 1069/2009 Approval for pet food plants using animal by- products.

4.2 Traceability requirements Documented system in place Samples and records of each batch shall be kept –Records: At least two years (Five years for GMOs) –End product: end of “commercial life” Rework shall be traceable Traceability system shall regularly reviewed and tested

4.3 Product identification and labelling Documented procedures for identifying materials Finished products labelled to ensure traceability Identification of each sales unit

4.4 Product Withdrawal and Recall DEFINITIONS Withdrawal: the return from customers Recall: return from consumers and customers.

4.4 Product Withdrawal and Recall System for managing complaints System of withdrawal and recall in place Manufacturer responsible to inform the Competent Authority Only put back in circulation after risk assessment Recall system regularly tested
