2 The opportunities for ethanol, biodiesal and biofuels are endless.

3 The future will depend on …… Technology Investment money Land mass Market Public acceptance

4 LARGEST LAND PER CAPITA IN THE WORLD 10% OF THE WORLD’S FOREST 25% OF THE WORLD’S FRESH WATER SUPPLY Largest supplier of oil to the USA $2.6 billion goods exchanged each day Major supplier of natural gas Canada supplies 10% of New York and New England states power A bit about Canada

5 Canada is a small market 30 million people live in Canada. We have roughly the same population as California. By September of this year Canada will have a 5% Renewable fuels mandate – meaning a market for ethanol of about 1.7 billion litres (500,000 gallons).

Canada is responsible for some big ideas.... that have a major impact on our world communications life saving drugs sports entertainment technology

7 Our ethanol industry is building on our innovation tradition Enerkem Iogen Lignol GreenField Four leading cellulosic technologies call Canada home

8 Enerkem – Wesbury Quebec Gasification to convert municipal sorted waste to ethanol  Active since 1999  Awarded $50 million by DOE to build plant in Mississippi  Plans to build world’s first municipal sorted waste-to- ethanol commercial plant in Edmonton, Alberta in 2010  Plans to build with GreenField in Varennes, Quebec

9 Lignol – British Columbia Bacterial technology to convert wood and other biomass to manufacture biochemicals and ethanol  Active since 2001 as Lignol  Awarded $30 million by DOE  Planning a commercial demonstration plant for 2010  Collaborations with…

10 Iogen – Ottawa, Ontario Enzymatic technology to convert wheat straw and other biomass to ethanol  Active since late 1970s  Over $300 million spent on research and development  $60 million demonstration plant in operation since 2007 (the world’s first)  Commercial manufacturer of enzymes  Iogen has alliances with….

11 GreenField Cellulosic – Chatham, Ontario Steam explosion and enzymatic technology to convert corn cobs and other biomass to ethanol  Running our pilot plant of 1 tonne a day since 2007  Significantly reduced pre-treatment time and the enzyme cost (by a factor of 20)  Commercial demonstration plant to be built in 2010 (5-10 tonnes a day)  Partnerships with Novozymes and Andritz

12 Canada is small but big on ideas
