3
European Federation of Geologists EFG Mission and actions Promoting the profession and practice of geology and its relevance. Promote professional title: EurGeol. Increase members of EFG (now 20/25). Advance Professional standards. Increase international cooperation. Develop relationships with European Parliament and European Commission.

5
European Federation of Geologists Why EFG involved? EFG Promote Geological profession & practice Promote Geothermal Energy Geological Expertise “EFG mission”“EFG strategic action”
6
European Federation of Geologists EFG’s broad network Worldwide network of professionals: Network of professional geologists in Europe. Network of Geological Associations in Europe Reaching approx. 75,000 geoscientists in Europe. Direct links with professionals worldwide.
7
European Federation of Geologists EFG network background Professionals in EFG network from: Research Industry Academia e.g. Research institutes, geological surveys. e.g. mining, oil & gas industry, private consultants, etc. Universities
8
European Federation of Geologists EFG Panel of Experts Objective: Provide high quality response to the European Commission and Parliament, participate in EC congresses, EC workshops, consultation meetings and so on. Important: Emphasize the importance of geology to society and to promote the importance of the geo-scientific profession.

European Federation of Geologists EFG Panels of Experts 13 panels of experts, include Resources and Reserves - Oil & Gas and Minerals Natural Hazards Soil Protection Sustainable Use of Natural Resources Environmental Impacts Geothermal Energy Geological Heritage Engineering Geology in Europe … Check current activities at EFG website: www.eurogeologists.de
10
European Federation of Geologists EFG group on Geothermal Energy EFG expert panel on Geothermal Energy launched in September 2005. Status: 20 experts from 11 European countries. Currently involved: Geological Surveys Research Institutes Oil companies Private consultants
11
European Federation of Geologists Expert panel work plan Investigate promotion options to raise awareness of Geothermal Energy source. Investigate collaborative research possibilities between oil companies and research institutes. Reinforce the network link between experts and others associations. Extend list of experts to cover all European countries. Co-operate with geothermal organisations: European Geothermal Energy Council √ International Geothermal Association
12
European Federation of Geologists Identification of further cooperation between EFG and ENGINE Project ENGINE project European Federation of Geologists To find new geothermal resources in Europe Geologists from all European countries and worldwide Geological experts in these fields have an important capacity and knowledge to develop this renewable energy in Europe. Promote Geothermal Energy through dissemination of knowledge, education & training EFG channels for promotion: Publications/ workshops/ etc.
13
European Federation of Geologists Promotion through EFG network Use large network to find and reach the right contacts within the community to push/enforce geothermal energy source. Use large network to promote geothermal energy as renewable energy source. Use network to establish closer links with e.g. Oil & gas industry and get them involved (incl. CO 2 sequestration). Use expert panels to create position papers and manifestos.
14
European Federation of Geologists Promotion using… Publications through: –European Geologists Magazine (EFG) –National Geological Associations newsletters –Manifestos –Etc. Organise EFG workshops on Geothermal Energy. Promotion at research committee meetings (e.g. EAGE) to include topic in technical programme of scientific conferences. Co-operation with geothermal organisations European Geothermal Energy Council (EGEC) International Geothermal Association (IGA)
15
European Federation of Geologists Potential Use of the European Legislative Process to Enhance Geothermal Energy Commission Proposal Council European Parliament Opinion Common position Amendments Conciliation: joint text Adoption 1 2 3 4 5 4 5 Direct approval if agreement with EP Commission opinion on EP amendments Consultation: EFG Office provides paper to enhance Geothermal Energy EFG Office provides paper to enhance Geothermal Energy National Associations provides paper to enhance Geothermal Energy
16
European Federation of Geologists Conclusions EFG has included the geothermal energy as important item in its Action plan, since the Geological profession is intimately linked with it. Its geological experts in these fields have an important capacity and knowledge to develop this renewable energy in Europe. The broad network of EFG and promotion capabilities will be able to improve the visibility and raise awareness of geothermal energy as relevant energy source.
