Analyze how author’s use flashbacks, foreshadowing, and characterization to provide the reader with information. Compare the use of literary techniques in two different genres.

Essential Questions Use the Think-Pair-Share strategy to answer the essential questions. How do flashbacks and foreshadowing help advance the plot? How does characterization advance the plot?

Word Wall Vocab. Under vocabulary tab in your binder place your word wall handout, and write the following definition. Flashback: the interruption in the sequence of events to show events that occurred in the past. Foreshadowing: the use of clues to hint at events that will occur in the future.

Foreshadowing (p.177) How does the author/director let you know you are reading/watching foreshadowing? What inferences can you make based on the foreshadowing?

Characterization (p.178) How are Scott Smalls and Paul Fisher revealed to the audience? Look at their actions, appearances, thoughts, and dialogue.
