12 HISTORICAL FICTION  Turn to your neighbor – What does the word genre mean?  How can a story be both history and fiction?

13 FEATURES OF HISTORICAL FICTION  It is a narrative, a story  The setting is in a real time or place of the past.  Plot or action may include a significant event from the past.  Characters may include real people who made important contributions to the culture or time period in which the novel is set.  Real events and fictional events are woven together.

14 GENRE CHECK  Can The Watson’s Go to Birmingham – 1963 be considered historical fiction? Why or why not?

15 AMERICAN CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT  Civil Rights – the rights people have to equal treatment and equal opportunities under a country’s laws.  A Movement – is a group of people who share the same beliefs and work together for the same cause.
