Type Basics Typography: The design of letterforms and the arrangement of them in two-dimensional space. Type font: A complete set of letterforms, numerals, and signs in a particular face, size and style. ( Ariel 12 pt. – AaBbCcDd…12345…@#$%&…) Type style: Modifications that create design variety while retaining the essential visual characteristic. ( AaBbCcDd… AaBbCcDd… AaBbCcDd… ) Uppercase: The larger set of letters or capitals. ( ABCDEFG ) Lowercase: The small set of letters. ( abcdefg ) Point size: The height of the type.

Parts of Type http://www.seekpeace.com/typo/ Baseline: Defines the bottom of capital letters and of lowercase letters. Ascender: The part of lowercase letters that rise. Descender: The part of lowercase letters that falls below the baseline. Counter: Space enclose by the strokes of a letter.

Types of Type Serif: Type that has ending strokes. ( Garamond ) Sans Serif: Type without ending strokes. (Ariel) Script: Type that most resembles handwriting. (Edwardian Script) Novelty: Type that is trendy and modern which is hard to read in large amounts. (Curlz MT)
