respiration 7 th scienceCHAPTER 4-2

Monday 12/8/14 Agenda-respiration Finish photosynthesis handout, page 122, & job qualifications paragraph These were assigned Thursday & Friday (due tomorrow) Respiration Fermentation Word-define-picture- use in a sentence Show me when you are done 8 points

respiration What is the first stage of respiration? Takes place in the cytoplasm Glucose is broken down into smaller molecules A small amount of energy is released

respiration What is the second stage of respiration? Takes place in the mitochondria Smaller glucose molecules are broken down into smaller ones Needs oxygen Releases a lot of energy

respiration Besides energy, what are the 2 other products of respiration? Carbon dioxide Water These are released when you exhale (breathe out)

Respiration equation

How are photosynthesis & respiration related

Tuesday 12/9/14 Agenda- fermentation Warm up Finish missing work (see board)

fermentation What is fermentation? It is a way for cells to get energy from food without using oxygen. Energy released is less than during respiration.

fermentation What is alcoholic fermentation? Occurs in yeasts and other single celled organisms Products are alcohol, carbon dioxide and energy Used in baking bread & making beer.

Alcoholic fermentation

Wednesday 12/10/14 Agenda fermentation Warm-up What is the difference between respiration and fermentation?

fermentation What is lactic acid fermentation? Occurs in muscles when they don’t have enough oxygen Occurs during physical activity Lactic acid is a product that makes your muscles sore

Lactic acid fermentation ATP is Energy ATP is released energy Lactate is lactic acid

Lactic acid fermentation

Start/end make a chart (see sample) comparing the start/end of the 4 processes we have learned 4 processes Photosynthesis Respiration Alcoholic fermentation Lactic acid fermentation

Thursday 12/11/14 Agenda- fermentation What is the difference between alcoholic fermentation and lactic acid fermentation? What is the same?

Friday 12/12/14 Agenda- photosynthesis review Where does photosynthesis take place?
