Use the simple past to tell about things that are finished. We arrived last night Past X Future Now

3 Grammar Notes There are three spellings for the regular simple past in affirmative statements: d Arrivearrived I arrived late. ed LandLanded We landed in Quito. ied TryTried He tried to change his flight.

4 Grammar Notes Use did not + base form of the verb in negative statements. We did not stay at the hotel. Use didn’t for negative statements in speaking or informal writing. We didn’t stay at a hotel.

5 Grammar Notes The verb form is the same for all of the subject pronouns I visited Seoul. You visited Cincinnati. She visited Mexico City. He visited Tokyo. It visited Melbourne. We visited Dubai. They visited Bogota.

6 Grammar Notes Time markers usually come at the beginning or end of a sentence. Yesterday I studied. I studied yesterday. You can use yesterday alone. You can also use it before morning, afternoon, or evening. I visited my friends yesterday. I visited my friends yesterday evening. This is just more specific on the time.

7 Grammar Notes Use ago after a length of time.
I started this class a month ago. Use last before words like night, week, or year. I arrived here last month.
