Malawi Originally known as Nyasaland, and ruled by the British from Joined with North and South Rhodesia to create Central African Federation. It became a republic in Ruled by Doctor Hastings Banda. Now a multiparty democracy.

Classified as a low income country as debts rose to 300% of its income. Eligible under the HIPC scheme but failed to meet conditions under the IMF. Recently £2 billion of debts scrapped. Now can begin to improve public service and welfare. Achieving the MDGs. Light at the end of a long tunnel??
