1 Welcome to the National Honor Society Informational Meeting Mrs. Quintero and Mrs. Stein Be sure to pick up a copy of the information sheet.

2 Welcome! We’re your NHS advisors: –Mrs. Quintero (412.344.2000 x13638) – A-L –Mrs. Stein (412.344.2003 x 5) – M-Z Please see your appropriate advisor if you have questions

3 Congratulations! You have been selected because you have a weighted QPA of at least a 3.8. That was the only requirement that we have considered thus far.

4 What are the other requirements? You have already demonstrated scholarship, now you must demonstrate the following: –Service –Leadership –Character

5 Service Your community service hours should be on record with Mrs. Kolko in the Activities Office –JUNIORS: 30 hours total, 5 hours in-school and 5 hours out-of-school EACH academic year –SENIORS: 40 hours total, 5 hours in-school and 5 hours out-of-school EACH academic year –Paid positions DO NOT COUNT as community service –The deadline to turn in your documentation of volunteer work is Wednesday, March 10 th by 3:30 p.m. Please go to Mrs. Kolko’s office to obtain a copy of your service record.

6 Leadership You must have demonstrated leadership during your time at MTLHS –Leadership can best be characterized as a sustained effort or position that helps you and others work towards a specific goal –Leadership positions are those in which you have gone above and beyond the normal realm of participation in certain activities –A good leadership role is one that is ongoing

7 Leadership *Titles like “captain” and “homeroom rep” have different meanings and responsibilities in different sports and homerooms. The detailed description is what will make all the difference. –If you’re unsure, please ask your appropriate NHS advisor. –You must include a DETAILED DESCRIPTION of your job as a leader. Good Examples of Leadership Questionable Examples of Leadership -Elected Officer of a Student Council Committee, Club, or Organization -Organized and facilitated group activities/service projects -Tutoring -Participating in class or an organization -Homeroom Representative* -Team captain*

8 Character You will additionally be evaluated in the following areas: –Your current and past teachers will evaluate you based on the quality of your character Ex. Regularly completed homework assignments Ex. Never cheated –Your attendance record is in good standing If you have more than 20 absences (excused OR unexcused), you must attach a statement of explanation –Your discipline record is in good standing No major infractions in the past calendar year (suspension/arrest) No more than 5 detentions in the past calendar year Any prior major infractions must include a statement of reflection

9 The Online Application –The application is online at the NHS website: http://www.mtlsd.org/nhs/http://www.mtlsd.org/nhs/ –Complete the online portion of the application at the bottom of the page. –Your completed online application is due on Tuesday, March 16, 2010 by 3:15 p.m. THERE WILL BE NO EXCEPTIONS!

10 The Leadership Form –Download the leadership form from the NHS website and fill it out with detailed descriptions. –We must have this form in hard-copy format so that you can obtain signatures verifying your leadership roles. –You will also need a hard copy of your Community Service hours that is signed by Mrs. Kolko. –Both completed forms are due to Mrs. Stein, located in the Principal’s Office by 3/16 at 3:15 pm THERE WILL BE NO EXCEPTIONS!

11 Begin your application Process To begin your application process –www.mtlsd.org/nhswww.mtlsd.org/nhs –Print your leadership form and obtain required signatures

12 Induction You will be notified by mail around the middle of April if you have been selected or did not qualify to be a member of NHS. If you are selected, there is an induction ceremony on Monday, April 19, 2010. We will have a rehearsal that morning at 7:15 a.m. in the auditorium. You must attend both the morning walkthrough and evening ceremony.

13 Maintaining Your Membership Your membership is valid for college applications as long as you: –Complete 10 additional hours of community service during your senior year BEFORE 12/17/2010 This does not apply for current seniors –Maintain good standing in attendance –Maintain good standing in character –Maintain a QPA greater than or equal to 3.8 ANY QUESTIONS?
