1600’s European Visitors 1622 French Explorer Etienne Brule is the first to visit. 1634 Jean Nicolet paddles onto Michigama meaning “great lake”. 1668 Jacques Marquette builds a mission which is the first European settlement in Michigan. 1680 Fur trade begins to flourish in the Great Lake area. Father Marquette

1700 - 1800 1701 Antoine de la Cadillac builds a fort where Detroit is now located. 1787 Congress combines land from what is now Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, and parts of Minnesota to form the Northwest Territory. 1800 Michigan becomes part of the Indiana Territory. 1805 Congress creates the Territory of Michigan with Detroit as its capital.

1800’s 1813 Lewis Cass becomes Michigan’s territorial governor. 1817 John Jacob Astor founds the American Fur Company on Mackinac Island.

1800’s 1835 The Territory of Michigan and the state of Ohio fight over ownership of a band of land call the “Toledo Strip”. Ohio receives the strip and Michigan gains the western Upper Peninsula.

1837 On January 26, 1837, Michigan becomes the 26 th state to be admitted to the Union.

1800’s 1840 The logging era begins. 1844-45 The copper and iron mining boom begins in the Upper Peninsula. 1847 The state capital is moved from Detroit to Lansing.

1800’s ▫1894 C.W. Post markets Postum. ▫1896 Henry Ford builds his first automobile in Detroit. ▫1899 Ransom E. Olds opens Michigan’s first automobile factory in Detroit.

1900’s 1903 Henry Ford organizes the Ford Motor Company. ◦W. K. Kellogg starts a breakfast food processing company in Battle Creek.

1900’s 1908 Ford markets the Model T. William Durant forms General Motors.

1900’s 1909 Michigan builds America’s first concrete highway. 1914 Ford offers $5.00 a day to work in automobile factory. 1935 Michigan is in the Great Depression. 1941 Michigan factories are used to build equipment needed to help the WWII effort.

1900’s 1974 The Mackinac Bridge is opened. Labor Day Walk

1900’s 1957 Gerald Ford becomes the first President from Michigan. 1989 The Michigan Library and Historical Museum is dedicated in Lansing.

1900’s 1992 Michigan’s Capitol is restored to its original appearance.

2000’s 2001 Detroit celebrates its 300 th birthday. 2003 Jennifer Granholm becomes first female governor.
