7. Texans Fight Back 1. Santa Anna invaded Texas in fall of 1835 and wiped out the 187 defenders at the Alamo (February of 1836). 2. A few weeks later, over 300 Mexican prisoners were massacred at Goliad. The Alamo

8. Texans Win Their Independence Even before the Alamo and Goliad, Texans had declared their independence 3. Led by their president, the Texans surprised Santa Anna’s force at the San Jacinto River With “Remember the Alamo” as their battle cry, the Texans defeated the Mexicans in 15 minutes and captured Santa Anna

9. The Lone Star Republic The Republic of Texas (the Lone Star Republic) was formally recognized by the United States in July of 1836, but President Andrew Jackson did not support annexation at this time. Why? Texas did not enter the United States until February of 1845. 9 years as its own country
