Westward Movement American settlers poured westward from the coastal states into the Midwest, Southwest, and Texas. These settlers migrated in search of economic opportunity in the form of land to own and farm. During the 1820s the Mexican government invited American farmers to settle in Texas. GTT

Americans Come to Texas Moses Austin got Spanish permission in 1820 to bring 300 families to Texas. Eventually his son, Stephen Austin, brought 1200 families to Texas in 1821. Mexico continued to encourage American immigration into Texas through the 1820s. Stephen Austin from IRC GTT

Tension Between Mexico and the Americans A Mexican law in 1825 expected Americans in Texas to become Roman Catholics After 1830 slavery was banned by Mexico Mexico closed Texas’s borders but Americans continued to enter Santa Anna became president of Mexico and tried to enforce the payment of taxes from Texas Santa Anna

Texans Fight Back 1. Santa Anna invaded Texas in fall of 1835 and wiped out the 187 defenders at the Alamo (February of 1836). 2. A few weeks later, over 300 Mexican prisoners were massacred at Goliad. The Alamo

Texans Win Their Independence Even before the Alamo and Goliad, Texans had declared their independence 3. Led by their president, the Texans surprised Santa Anna’s force at the San Jacinto River With “Remember the Alamo” as their battle cry, the Texans defeated the Mexicans in 15 minutes and captured Santa Anna

The Lone Star Republic The Republic of Texas (the Lone Star Republic) was formally recognized by the United States in July of 1836, but President Andrew Jackson did not support annexation at this time. Why? Texas did not enter the United States until February of 1845. 9 years as its own country
