2  American settlers in Texas revolted against the Mexican government and created the independent Republic of Texas.

3  Spain settled modern Texas in 1600.  Mexico wins it’s independence from Spain in 1821.  Mexico was eager to have settlers in their northern region (Texas). Why?

4  Stephen F. Austin (father of Texas) gets permission from Mexico to allow Americans to settle.  Americans in Texas would get free land if they swore allegiance to Mexico  30,000 Americans moved to Texas by 1830.  Slavery illegal in Mexico, but settlers brought them anyway  Mexico became alarmed at the high number of immigrants, sent army into Texas to stop more settlers from coming.

5  US offers to buy Texas, but Mexico refuses.  Tensions rise between Mexican army and Texans.  Fighting broke out between Texans and Mexicans (1835)

6  Texans fortified The Alamo, a former mission in San Antonio.  Mexican President Santa Anna lead the army to San Antonio  Mexicans surround Alamo, slaughter all 200 Texans.

7  Texans use the Alamo as motivation.  In 1836 the Texans defeat Santa Anna’s forces and win their independence.  Texas is a nation from 1836-1845.  Annexed by US in 1845.
