Marbury v Madison ► The Supreme Court case Marbury v. Madison increased the power of the judicial branch of government by establishing the idea of judicial review.

The Louisiana Purchase ► Under President Jefferson’s leadership, the United States added the Louisiana Territory by buying it from France’s Napoleon Bonaparte.

Explorers Head West ► Expeditions led by Lewis, Clark increased Americans’ understanding of the West as they looked for a water route to the Pacific Ocean.

The War of 1812 ► Great Britain and the United States went to battle in the War of 1812 after Britain impressed US citizens, interfered with American shipping and armed Native American resistance.

Effects of the War ► The US won the War of 1812, which led to an increase in prosperity and national pride.

Monroe Doctrine ► The Monroe Doctrine warned European powers not to interfere in Americas and strengthened the US’s relationship with Latin America.

The Missouri Compromise ► Sectionalism, or disagreements between different regions, began to threaten the Union when Missouri applied to enter the Union. Adding Missouri would change the balance between free and slave states

Reviving the South’s Economy ► Eli Whitney’s invention of the cotton gin revived the economy of the South.

The Slave System ► The slave system in the South produced harsh living conditions and occasional rebellions like Nat Turners rebellion.
