2. Marbury v Madison ► The Supreme Court case Marbury v. Madison increased the power of the judicial branch of government by establishing the idea of judicial review.

3. The Louisiana Purchase ► Under President Jefferson’s leadership, the United States added the Louisiana Territory by buying it from France’s Napoleon Bonaparte.

4. Explorers Head West ► Expeditions led by Lewis, Clark increased Americans’ understanding of the West as they looked for a water route to the Pacific Ocean.

5. The War of 1812 ► Great Britain and the United States went to battle in the War of 1812 after Britain impressed US citizens, interfered with American shipping and armed Native American resistance.

6. Effects of the War ► The US won the War of 1812, which led to an increase in prosperity and national pride.

7. Monroe Doctrine ► The Monroe Doctrine warned European powers not to interfere in Americas and strengthened the US’s relationship with Latin America.

8. The Missouri Compromise ► Sectionalism, or disagreements between different regions, began to threaten the Union when Missouri applied to enter the Union.  Adding Missouri would change the balance between free and slave states

9. Missouri Compromise ► The Missouri Compromise settled the regional conflict and prohibited in any new states or territories north of 36°30’.

10. Americans Move West ► During the early 1800s, many Americans moved west of the Rocky Mountains to settle and trade – like Mountain Men and Mormons.

11. American Settlers Move to Texas ► Many American settlers moved to Texas after Mexico achieved independence from Spain.

12. Texans Revolt against Mexico ► Texans revolted against Mexican rule and established an independent nation.

13. Manifest Destiny ► Many Americans believed that the nation had a manifest destiny to claim new lands in the West including Oregon, Florida, California, and many other states in the Southwest.

14. Mexican-American War ► As a result of the Mexican-American War, the United States added territory in the Southwest. Oregon Florida Texas

15. Discovery of Gold Brings Settlers ► The discovery of gold brought settlers to California.

16. Beginning of the Industrial Revolution ► The invention of new machines in Great Britain led to the beginning of the Industrial Revolution – which transformed the way goods were produced in the United States. Great Britain

17. Changes in Working Life ► The introduction of factories changed working life for many Americans including the girls from Lowell’s factories. Unions were started to protect workers rights.

18. The Transportation Revolution ► New forms of transportation improved business, travel, and communications in the United States.

19. More Technological Advances ► Advances in technology led to new inventions that continued to change daily life and work.

20. Reviving the South’s Economy ► Eli Whitney’s invention of the cotton gin revived the economy of the South.

21. The Slave System ► The slave system in the South produced harsh living conditions and occasional rebellions like Nat Turners rebellion.
