8. 8 Nearby History and the Humanities The neighborhoods and communities in which we live have been shaped by the people who settled here as well as regional, state and national events, technological changes, and cultural developments. The Nearby History Institute will infuse the story of local experiences, places, and people with insights from urban history, social history, historical geography, immigration and migration studies, economic history, and cultural history

9. 9 The Nearby History Institute will bring public historians from area archives and museums together with faculty from the Dayton Public Schools and Wright State University to rethink and strengthen American history teaching in the Miami Valley. The institute focuses on integrating local history resources and research across the K-12 social studies and language arts curriculum. Wright State University will offer the workshop participants the option of registering for 2 or 4 graduate credit hours in either History or Education

10. 10 GOALS: g To introduce new inquiry based, interdisciplinary approaches to teaching; g To update and revise American history education in Dayton and the Miami Valley; g To help teachers gain a greater understanding of the multicultural, economic, social, and political history of Dayton and the Miami Valley; g To integrate local history research and resources with the NCSS, Ohio Department of Education curriculum; g To foster collaboration between area museums, archives, and school systems; g To promote effective educational programs in museums and archives;
