5 KINGDOMS OF LIVING THINGS 6
2
Animals
3
Characteristics of Animals Kingdom: Eukaryotes ( an organism with a complex cell or cells. Genetic material /DNA is organized into a membrane- bound nucleus or nuclei) Multicellular Heterotrophic Heterotrophic (Organism that can't make it's own food) Sexual reproduction (a few asexual) Motile = can move on own (a few are non-motile) Examples: sponges, jellyfish, mollusks, worms, arthropods, fish, reptiles, birds, mammals
4
Plants
5
Characteristics of Plants Kingdom: EukaryotesMulticellular Autotrophic Autotrophic (Organism that CAN make it's own food – through photosynthesis) Asexual and Sexual reproduction Non-motile Examples: mosses, ferns, conifers, and flowering plants
6
Fungi
7
Characteristics of the Fungi Kingdom: EukaryotesHeterotrophic Unicellular and Multicellular Asexual and sexual reproduction Non-motile Examples: Mushrooms, molds, yeasts
8
Protista (protozoans = “early animals”) very tiny organisms made up of a small number of cells They can have characteristics similar to plants or animals
9
Characteristics of the Protista Kingdom: Eukaryotes Heterotrophic and Autotrophic Unicellular (some live in colonies) Mostly aquatic Mostly asexual reproduction Motile and non-motile Examples: Protozoa and Algae
10
MONERA
11
Characteristics of the Monera (Bacteria) Kingdom:. Prokaryote (organism that lacks a nucleus and other complex cell structures = primitive cell). Heterotrophic and autotrophic Anaerobic (w/o oxygen) and aerobic (w/oxygen) aquatic, terrestrial and in the air asexual reproduction (split by binary fission) mostly non-motile
12
Comparing the two types of cells Simple Complex
13
What? A 6 th Kingdom?! Characteristics of the Archaea Kingdom: Note: Archaea are similar in size to bacteria but are now classified as a distinct Kingdom) What? A 6 th Kingdom?! Prokaryote (organism that lacks a nucleus and other complex cell structures = primitive cell). Heterotrophic Asexual reproduction Anaerobic (w/o oxygen) and aerobic (w/oxygen) Can survive in extreme environments (example: found in hot deep-sea thermal vents and in really salty water)
