Chemistry 310/311 Fall 2001 Mission: Determine if soils near Sherwin Williams White lead factory (10909 S. Cottage Grove) listed as EPA site in the neighborhood of Pullman, Chicago are elevated in lead as compared to other areas of Chicago. This area is not overall high for reported lead poisoning cases deriving from leaded paints (see map at http://www.luc.edu/depts/chem/faculty/fitch/fitchgroup /Service_Learning/Lead_in_Chicago/lead_in_chicago.html) but was the site of numerous white lead paint factories. The paint factories located in this region in the late 1800s as part of the industrial boom based on railways in Chicago.

Sampling Procedure 1. 3 foot square, grab samples at surface in each corner and in center, bag. 2. Dry 3. Split into 4 1 gramsubsamples. 3 serve as replicates of digestion. 1 serves as a lead spiked control. Spiked with 100 ug of lead. % Recovery: Solution blank 104% Soil spikes: 170+-132%: soils were much more variable in recovery. Soil samples with >35% relative standard deviation were omitted from the final report. 10 samples acquired at the factory site; 12 samples acquired in the surrounding vicinity up to 2 miles distant.
