5 TM 5 Workshop Goal To strengthen collaborations between EMS and PH practitioners and services/agencies through shared learning and action planning

6 TM 6 Workshop Objectives Know the names, contact information, and responsibilities of key players in EMS and PH in their communities. To enable senior and mid-level managers of EMS and PH services and agencies at regional, state, and local levels to:

7 TM 7 Objectives (cont.) Better understand the missions, roles and daily activities of EMS and PH, and their related impacts on the communities they serve.

8 TM 8 Objectives (cont.) Describe ways in which EMS and PH services/agencies can support one another and work together to better accomplish both missions with special emphasis on injury prevention and preparedness.

11 TM 11 EMS Agenda for the Future 1992 – 1994: Key groups and leaders identify need for EMS status report, needs assessment, and strategic plan 1995 – 1996: EMS Agenda supported by NHTSA and HRSA and developed with broad input from diverse stakeholders

12 TM 12 Key Recommendations of EMS Agenda EMS must: Expand role in public health and prevention and develop ongoing relationship with community public health and social services Become involved in community health monitoring and data collection Integrate with other health care provider systems to enhance the continuum of care and improve community health

13 TM 13 Roundtables Four Public Health and EMS Roundtables in 2000/2001 Sponsored by American Public Health Association (APHA) National Association of EMS Physicians With support and participation from NHTSA, HRSA and 20+ other key stakeholders

14 TM 14 Key Public Health Events Terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 Anthrax scare of October 16, 2001 Pandemic flu readiness plans of 2007 These public health events demonstrate the need for enhanced collaboration with EMS!

15 TM 15 CDC’s 2004 Initiative Goal: “Develop a national awareness curriculum that would educate personnel from EMS and public health about each others’ duties in order to improve collaboration and better understand the ‘intersections’ between the two disciplines.”

16 TM 16 Working Sessions APHA convened 3-day meeting of experts representing over 20 EMS and public health stakeholder organizations Guidance and curriculum outline became guiding template for this workshop!

17 TM 17 As Further Incentive for Collaboration National Strategy for Pandemic Influenza: Implementation Plan Submitted June 2007 by NHTSA to White House Cornerstone of local/regional readiness plans Requires coordination of surveillance, triage and treatment plans
