Today’s Agenda… We have dispersals today with Mr. Canosa’s class You will be using a chromebook today to get your information You will be assigned a specific number to use in this classroom You will go through the powerpoint to get all information With 20 minutes left in class we will review all the notes together
3
Today’s Agenda… If you do not know how to get to my wiki page WRITE THESE STEPS DOWN NOW! 1. Go to James Martin Middle school website 2. Click on faculty / staff 3. Click on Tracy Maas globe icon 4. click on 2014-2015 lessons tab 5. Select powerpoint for Respiration April 29 & 30
4
Today’s Agenda… Before getting your chromebook, everyone will turn their chairs around so your backs are to me We will do this by rows now! Remember you are not talking today…. You are getting the information from the wiki page and taking notes into your notebook We will review at the end of class
5
Warm Up 1.Atoms are mostly made up of: 1.Calcium 2.Empty space 3.Cells 4.Water 2.What is the difference between mass and volume? 1.There is no difference between mass and volume. 2.Mass is the amount of space it takes up and volume is the amount of stuff it is made of. 3.Mass is what color it is and volume is how loud it is. 4.Mass is the amount of stuff it is made of and volume is the amount space it takes up.
6
Let’s check our understanding… Explain each concept below in your own words: Photosynthesis Chloroplast and chlorophyll Leaf structure (stomata and guard cells) Transpiration (part of water cycle)
7
Chlorophyll In leaves Glucose –food for plant PRODUCTS REACTANTS DRAW PHOTOSYNTHESIS Water vapor
8
Draw a Chloroplast …
9
Draw a leaf…. WAXY CUTICLE LEAF EPIDERMIS CHLOROPLASTS GUARD CELLS STOMATA
10
Draw Transpiration….
11
Introduction to Cellular Respiration: As humans, we can only hold our breath for so long…..Pinch your nose shut, and see how long you can hold your breath Why did you eventually have to breathe out and then in?
12
WRITE IN NOTEBOOK… We need O₂ for 2 reasons… Respiration: Using our lungs to breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide Cellular Respiration: A chemical reaction within our cells which uses oxygen to break down stored energy from glucose
13
So what happens when you breathe? Write in notebook BUT IT’S NOT THIS SIMPLE…. Oxygen (O 2 ) goes in Carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) goes out
14
Today’s investigation! Today we are going to investigate how respiration (in plant and animal cells) is related to photosynthesis….
15
Respiration is the opposite of Photosynthesis! Write in notebook
16
Respiration – Write in Notebook Respiration is the process that breaks down sugar to make energy. It happens in animal cells and plant cells. Cellular Respiration Equation: Reactants (what goes in) Oxygen + Sugar (O 2 ) (C 6 H 12 O 6 ) (O 2 ) (C 6 H 12 O 6 ) Products (what comes out) Water + Carbon Dioxide (H 2 O) (CO 2 ) + ENERGY!! + ENERGY!!
17
So where does all this oxygen come from?? Remember, it is due to green plants doing PHOTOSYNTHESIS!
18
Write in notebook the 2 statements that are true? 1.Photosynthesis is like respiration in reverse 2.Photosynthesis produces CO2 3.Photosynthesis needs sunlight
19
Were you right? TWO statements that are true are highlighted in red 1.Photosynthesis is like respiration in reverse 2.Photosynthesis produces CO2 3.Photosynthesis needs sunlight
20
Discovery Education Videos… Record these questions below before watching the videos….(leave space to record your answers) 1. What is breathing? 2. What is respiration? 3. What happens to glucose in the presence of oxygen? 4. How are photosynthesis and cellular respiration related?
21
Discovery Education… You are going to watch 2 videos on Discovery Education Log in to your account using the following steps: 1. type in discovery education in a search box 2. log in username: cms student id# _ cms password: cms student id # Select the Science techbook Select the Essential Living Processes – Cellular respiration Select the Engage tab: from here you will watch 2 videos Breathing vs. Respiration video Cellular Respiration video
22
Video on Cellular Respiration in plants https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yxHZH0P 5aKI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yxHZH0P 5aKI In lima beans if time permits
23
Discovery Ed Video Follow up Questions: 1.What happens to glucose in the presence of oxygen? 2.Oxygen helps break down glucose so it can be used by cells for energy 3.How are photosynthesis and cellular respiration related? 4.They are opposite reactions; the products of photosynthesis are the reactants of cellular respiration
24
Make a foldable… Fold your notebook paper in half (hotdog style) Draw a line down the center fold Label Left Side: Photosynthesis Label Right Side: Cellular Respiration You should have two columns in your notebook (see the next slide)
25
PhotosynthesisCellular Respiration
26
Raise your hand now… You will receive a handout with a series of statements After reading each statement you must decide if the statement relates to photosynthesis or cellular respiration….. Good Luck…these are hard so think, think, think!
