A citizen is a person with rights, duties and responsibilities under a government.

Rights- Legal guarantees under a government. Duties- Things that someone is expected to do. Responsibilities- Things that someone may choose to do, but still important to being a good citizen.

Anyone born in the United States or a territory of the United states. Anyone who had at least one parent who was a United States citizen when they were born. You have been naturalized.

Territory- An area controlled by the U.S. government but not a state. Naturalization- The process someone goes through to become a citizen.

Application- Asking for something in a formal way

A person who wants to become a citizen fills out a form and submits it to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

In order to become a citizen, the applicant must prove the following things: Be at least 18 years old Live in the country for at least 5 years Have good moral character (No criminal record) Be loyal to the Constitution Read, write and speak English Have a knowledge of history and government of U.S. (Must pass citizenship test)

Moral character- The ability to tell right from wrong.

The right to vote and hold elected office. The right to say what you think in speech or writing as long as it doesn’t infringe on someone else’s rights. The right to practice your own religion. The right to have a fair trial.

People who have seen events related to a crime or have information that may help decide the guilt or innocence of a person.

People choose to be members of social groups. Examples could be clubs, organizations, or teams.

Some people choose to be active participants in their citizen role. Active participants can run for office, attend political meetings, and vote. Some people choose to be less active in their citizen role. These people contribute to the common good through volunteering, donating money to charities, or working in jobs that help people.

Charity- An organization that helps less fortunate people.

Every time a person buys something or pays for a service, they are a consumer. The consumer role is played by almost everyone and is important to keep our country running.

Consumer-A person who buys goods or services.

People must decide how much time and energy they put into being a citizen. Each person will have a different way of approaching this. A person’s opinion of their citizenship role may change with age, interests, and career choice.
