Secondary School Transfer Meeting for Year 5 Parents Secondary School Transfer Meeting for Year 5 Parents Wednesday 18 th March 2015 6pm The Brent Primary School

GOOD LUCK As always...... it’s still a nightmare!

‘ Secondary Transfer’ belongs to the secondary schools and it is THEIR system. WE (THE BRENT) HAVE NO SAY WHERE PUPILS TRANSFER TO. THIS IS TOTALLY BETWEEN THE SECONDARY SCHOOLS AND PARENTS, WITH THE LOCAL AUTHORITY (KENT) OVERSEEING THE PROCESS. THE SYSTEM IS IMPOSED BY THE SECRETARY OF STATE. However, at The Brent, we will do all we can to help and support our families.

The Secondary Common Application Form (SCAF)   Applications must be completed on-line by the end of October (date to be confirmed). Please contact Debby Clucas (our Family Liaison Co-ordinator) for support and/or computer access if required.   Parents are invited to make 4 PREFERENCES, IN ORDER.   The Leigh Technology Academy, Longfield Academy and Wilmington Academy are part of the centralised system and do not have their own admissions system.  You will have the results of the Secondary Selection Tests before you need to complete the SCAF. You can not name a grammar school on the SCAF if your child did not take the Kent Test in September.  Some schools require a supplementary form which must be returned to the school you are applying to.

 NOT parental choice  NOT our school’s preference  NOT your child’s preference  NOT Auntie Flo’s preference…

Any school you like... as long as you meet the entry requirements and the over-subscription criteria. REFERENCE TO THE ‘ADMISSION GUIDE’, IS ESSENTIAL AND IS AVAILABLE TO READ ON THE KCC WEBSITE. Do NOT just name one preference!

CONSIDER: Your child’s aptitude and abilities School’s specialism Religion Single sex (co-educational) or mixed Nearness to home /ease of transport Size of school School’s aims and aspirations - it’s vision Recent changes …

You will know your child’s test results before you need to complete the SCAF Form.  There will be two main tests (multiple choice): one assessing reasoning ability and one assessing literacy and numeracy. All candidates will also complete a writing task.  It is important to remember that the selection test is designed to select the top 20-25% of academic Year 6 pupils.  Results are advised to parents by letter mid October.

A Bexley school? o Parents will need to consider options set out in the ‘Admission to Secondary Schools in Bexley’ booklet, which will be available to view online. o Online registration to sit Bexley Selection Tests will be available from 5 th May to 12 th July and further details can be found at www.bexley.gov.uk/selectiontests.www.bexley.gov.uk/selectiontests o Bexley Selection Test dates are Tuesday 15 th or Wednesday 16 th September and children outside of Bexley will be notified of their allocated test centre and session time. o Parents need to list Bexley school preferences on the same SCAF form. o Results will be sent out to parents at the beginning of October.
